Monday Night Raw
January 24, 1994
The current WWF champs were as follows:
World Champion: Yokozuna (6/13/1993)
Intercontinental Champion: Razor Ramon (9/27/1993)
World Tag Team Champions: The Quebecers (1/17/1994)
SIDENOTE: Don’t worry. I haven’t forgotten about the last Raw of April 1997. It’s coming.
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Jim Ross. Believe it or not, JR’s first time as a commentator on Raw.
- Lex Luger vs. Austin Steele
No surprise to anyone familiar with WWE history, Vince and Jim Ross announce Lex Luger as one of the co-winners of the Royal Rumble match. Vince also wastes no time in telling us that last week’s Monday Night Raw was the most-watched show on cable in that timeslot. That should not have been THAT hard to do back in those days of cable TV. As for the decision on who will face the WWF champion at WrestleMania 10, Jack Tunney will make the announcement this weekend. Luger finishes Steele with a superplex at 3:41. Lex really celebrates the heck out of this match – even going as far as to wave the American flag around.
- Jeff Jarrett vs. John Paul
Ross ponders whether or not Jeff Jarrett is actually on a cover of a recent edition of a country music magazine. Jarrett gets Paul with an O’Connor roll and wins with a handful of tights at 4:12. Afterwards, JJ delivers a running DDT just for fun.
- The Headshrinkers (w/Afa) vs. Men on a Mission (w/Oscar)
Since the Hart brothers EXPLODED at the Royal Rumble, Men on a Mission sub in place of their family dysfunction. There couldn’t be a worse replacement! Mo and Fatu start the match while McMahon and Ross discuss Owen turning on Bret. Slow start to say the least. Crowd has fun chanting ‘Whoomp! There It Is’ alot. It really was a fun song in 1993. Mabel comes in, but the Headshrinkers can’t do things to him. Mo becomes *your* face in peril as we go to commercial. AND WE’RE BACK! Mo is still in trouble. Eventually after double-teams and such, Fatu gets crotched up top for the HOT TAG TO MABEL! He knocks the Headshrinkers all around and brings Afa in for a DOUBLE NOGGIN KNOCKER. Rolling Kick to Samu gets two. Like an idiot, Mo tags back in too quickly and eats a superkick. Mabel makes the save, but then gets dumped over the top rope to go crashing on the floor. That leaves Mo all alone for a FLYING SPLASH by Fatu for the 1-2-3. (10:52 shown) Mabel slid in to try for the last second save. The thing is though that Oscar did absolutely nothing to help Mabel get back up in time. Worst. Manager. Ever. Formula tag yes, but not a very fun one. *
- Adam Bomb (w/Harvey Wippleman) vs. Tommy Angel
McMahon and Ross bring up Adam Bomb drawing #30 in the Rumble match, yet completely unsuccessful in winning the thing. They blame Harvey Wippleman. Anyways, ATOM SMASHER destroys Angel for the win at 4:14.
- Doink the Clown (w/Dink) vs. Joey Stallings
Dink busts out the invisible dog on a leash bit and Joey Stallings SELLS a dog bite. Vince of course finds it incredibly amusing while Ross appeared that his intelligence was insulted. I really miss Matt Borne watching these old Raw episodes. WHOOPIE CUSHION wins at 3:26.
- Shawn Michaels (w/Diesel) vs. Tyrone Knox
ANOTHER squash. McMahon and Ross stir up the HBK and Diesel controversy at the Rumble match. HBK didn’t help Diesel when he was getting ganged up on and was then eliminated. Vince kills off any rumors that CBS wants the WWF to replace the NFL once it leaves for the FOX network. Are you kidding me? When turnbuckle smashes fail due to being African American, Tyrone comes back with JYD headbutts. However, SWEET CHIN MUSIC and the PILEDRIVER do have an effect on the head. Cover and the three-count at 3:25.
NEXT WEEK: 1-2-3 Kid vs. Johnny Polo and Kwang makes his RAW debut. Plus, a special interview with Royal Rumble co-winners Bret Hart and Lex Luger.
