(Taped on 8/16/05)
The current NWA & TNA Champs were as follows:
NWA World Champion: Raven (6/19/2005)
NWA World Tag Team Champions: The Naturals (4/29/2005)
TNA X-Division Champion: Christopher Daniels (3/13/2005)
Things happened last week! They show us what happened!
Your hosts are Mike Tenay and Don West.
- Sean Waltman & Alex Shelley vs. Konnan & Lance Hoyt – Chris Candido Memorial Tag Team Tournament (Second Round)
Konnan handles Shelley fairly easy to start. He delivers the Rolling Clothesline and then Waltman comes in with a spin kick. Tag to Waltman, another spin kick gets two. Back to Shelley, he double-KO’s himself with Konnan. Tag to Hoyt, he backdrops Waltman into the freaking CEILING. Another spin kick to Hoyt, but he stops the Bronco Buster with a big boot. As he goes for the pin, Kip James appears on the apron to distract the ref. Hoyt elbows him off the apron and backs up into a low blow from Waltman, which leads to the X FACTOR for the win. (3:24) So Waltman and Shelley advance to the finals. ¾*
In the back, Jeff Jarrett goes to tell BG James and Ron Killings that the foundation of TNA needs to stick together, or they will be cut once they get to Spike TV. Konnan comes back from after his match and can’t believe his boys are talking to JJ. They seem convinced he’s telling the truth.
- TNA X-Division Champion Christopher Daniels vs. Shark Boy
This is non-title, folks. Feeling out process to start with hammerlocks and headlocks. Shark Boy ducks a charge and Daniels goes flying to the floor to take a pescado. Back in, Daniels punts Shark Boy in the head. Big slam and knee drop gets two. Shark Boy rallies back and tries the ten-count punch. Daniels shoves him off, but charges into a reverse neck breaker for two. Missile dropkick is swatted away by Daniels. He hits the uranage and the BME gets 1-2-NO! What. Here comes the ANGEL’S WINGS, but AJ Styles walks down the ramp. He distracts Daniels who walks back into a small package for the 1-2-3. (6:38) So Daniels costs AJ Styles the Super X Cup, he costs Daniels a non-title match against Shark Boy. I guess that’s SOME measure of revenge. **
- Chris Sabin & Shocker vs. Sonjay Dutt & Ron Killings – Chris Candido Memorial Tag Team Tournament (Second Round)
Sonjay and Shocker do some lucha stuff to start. It’s too much to transcribe and literally goes nowhere, as it usually does. Truth and Sabin take over. Sabin stuns Killings with a headscissors, but then takes a powerslam. Tag to Sonjay, and a series of kicks lead to a try at the HINDU PRESS! Sabin avoids and levels Sonjay with an enziguri. Shocker tags in as we go to commercial. When we return, it’s apparent Shocker has been working the leg during the break. Sabin tags and dropkicks the knee in the ropes before applying a half crab. Tag to Shocker, he delivers a nice slingshot elbow drop to the knee. He follows up with a powerbomb and tries a second, but Sonjay turns that into a Rocker Dropper on the way down. HOT TAG TO TROOF! Flatliner by Killings on Sabin gets two. Sabin tries the CRADLE SHOCK and knocks Shocker over by accident. During the confusion, Truth counters with a rollup and Shocker still makes the save showing he’s not given up on Sabin. While they argue over what happened, Sonjay flies in with a flying bodypress. This time he charges them, but gets caught with a double flapjack. While Shocker takes out Truth on the floor, Sabin puts Sonjay in a Majistral Cradle and gets the win. (9:20) Some miscommunication problems, but Sabin and Shocker pick up the win to face Waltman and Shelley in the CCMTT finals next week.
- Monty Brown vs. Sonny Siaki (w/Apolo)
Looks like a glorified squash, but Siaki does okay against Brown. He hits the SIAKAPALYPSE, but has to come up off a cover when he sees that Kip James has knocked out his buddy Apolo. Siaki flies on top of him with a suicida and punches on Kip until Brown stops him with the POUNCE from around the corner. This is just gotten out of control, so the ref throws out the match. (1:43) To send a message, Monty finds a chair and decapitates Siaki! SNAP! In the ring, he goes after Apolo. When Apolo starts fighting back, Kip helps him out with a chair. They want Apolo decapitated too, but Lance HOYT runs them off before any more damage can be done. ½*
Nice promo for next week’s main event: James Mitchell puts his Abyss together with Rhino to take out the NWA world champ and Sabu, who is just another victim. MUAHAHAHAHA!
- Chase Stevens (w/Andy Douglas & Jimmy Hart) vs. James Storm (w/Chris Harris)
Big brawl to start. Stevens tries to dropkick away skin-the-cat, but Storm flips back up at just the right moment and face slams Stevens on the floor. Like a dummy, Storm tries a Stinger Splash up against the guardrail and naturally misses. Stevens UPS THE VIOLENCE with a snap suplex onto the ramp. Commercials! AND WE’RE BACK! They’re back inside the ring. Storm puts Stevens in the tree of woe and dropkicks him in the face. He tries a baseball slide, but Stevens sits up and Storm crotches himself on the bottom rope. Stevens comes back with a moonsault press for two. Storm fires back with a punt to the face for two. Stevens counters the Swinging Noose DDT and slams him off the top. Storm tries the EYE OF THE STORM, but Stevens slips out and hits a Death Valley Driver for 1-2-NO! They both try crossbody blocks for a double-knockout. Meanwhile, Harris and Douglas start arguing and finger-pointing. Once Stevens and Storm come up, they superkick each other at the same time. Harris points over at Douglas and Jimmy Hart to distract the ref and then pushes Storm on top of Stevens for the win. (10:40) Looks like AMW is showing signs of turning heel a little early here. Not a bad little encounter. **½
