Tonight! Steamboat has to say “slay slimy snakes” tens time fast! In other matches, two fatties will go at it! Plus, the new tag champs the Bulldogs will defend their belts for the first time on national TV against the Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff! Do I really need a Sheik joke there? It’s kind of cliché at this point, so no I won’t do it. Also, Adrian Adonis gets his shot at gay love with Paul Orndorff! In the mega-featured bout, Hogan does his best Junkyard Dog impression! It’s time for Saturday Night’s Main Event #6!

This was the first Saturday Night’s Main Event I ever remember watching, so it has some sentimental value to me. Not like Zach Braff on Scrubs-level sentimentality, but pretty close.

• Hulk Hogan & Junkyard Dog (w/Haiti Kid) vs. Terry & Hoss Funk (w/Jimmy Hart)
  

Oh man, Hogan is JYD and JYD is Hogan! Possibly the worst role reversal ever! Hogan gets on his knees and headbutts the Funks out of the ring after JYD slams them a bunch. By the way, Haiti Kid is a black midget who sports a Mohawk and Hoss is Dory Funk Jr. Hoss gets slammed by JYD and then tags in Terry. JYD avoids a corner charge and Terry goes shoulder-first into the post. Terry grabs the Haiti Kid and rips his Hogan t-shirt, but then JYD pulls him by the hair and brings him back in the ring for a clothesline. Hogan and Hoss tag in. A criss-cross brings Terry in for some reason and Hogan nails them both. Running elbow drop on Hoss gets two. JYD tags in for a clothesline. Terry tags and brings JYD to his corner for some double-teaming. JYD fights back, but then Jimmy Hart beats Haiti Kid down with Terry’s branding iron. Just before JYD takes Haiti Kid back to safety, Terry gets in a mean stomp on his head. I love it! Heenan ~ “Looks like JYD is heading back to Rent-a-Midget to get him another midget!” Hahaha. Hogan fights off the Funks for a while, but then Hoss dumps him out as Terry jabs the branding iron in his gut. Terry brings Hogan over to the entry way for some guardrail action, but JYD comes over for the save and whips Terry into a backdrop. Back in the ring, Hogan and JYD work over Hoss. And what is this? Haiti Kid is back! JYD runs into a fist in the corner and Terry tags in as the crowd chants JYD. Double-KO spot ensues. Terry cuts off the tag to Hulk, but misses a splash off the top rope. Hot tag to Hulk and before I can even finish typing this, he pins Terry with the LEG DROP. (10:19) Pretty wild brawl, but JYD brought it down a bit. **½

• King Kong Bundy vs. Uncle Elmer
  

Whoa! King Kong Bundy weighs more than Elmer! Who knew. Okay, this is going to suck. There’s a young Timmy White refereeing this match. Elmer NO-SELLS Bundy’s shoulderblocks, so he goes to the eyes and pounds him down to the mat. Elmer fights back and humps Bundy in the corner. He hits the Avalanche, but not a second one. Bundy elbow drop gets three. (2:33) Next. CRAP

• Paul Orndorff vs. Adrian Adonis (w/Jimmy Hart)
  

This is what Orndorff was doing before he got involved in his feud of a lifetime with Hogan: fighting off transvestites. Orndorff starts off hot and heavy with Adonis. That goes on for several minutes. Jimmy gets pulled into the ring and thrown on top of Adonis as we go to a commercial. Orndorff gets pulled out, but Adonis gets posted. Orndorff chases after Jimmy and then gets nailed with the megaphone. Adonis controls for a bit, but hits knees off a top-rope splash. Orndorff mounts a comeback, rips at his dress, and chokes him down with it. Tim White tries to stop him, but he gets shoved away and that’ll get a guy DQ’ed. (9:32) It’s
this shades of grey attitude from Orndorff that eventually leads to the heel turn heard ’round the world in July. *½

Empty arena interview with Hulk Hogan: Gene brings up the King Kong Bundy ambush from the last SNME. Hogan says it reminded him why he needs to fight everyday for Hulkamania! Now to WrestleMania 2, What are your thoughts on that match, Hulk? He had to wrestle that match to back up what he preaches. WHATCHA GONNA DO, BROTHER?

• Jake Roberts (w/Damien the SNAKE~!) vs. Ricky Steamboat
  

Jake’s biggest test to date in the WWF. He’s undefeated, you know. Before the match even gets started, Roberts clotheslines Steamboat off the apron and gives him a DDT on the concrete floor, legitimately knocking him out. After that, Steamboat gets pulled into the ring and given the Damien treatment. No match obviously, but a great way to kick start Jake’s first big feud in the WWF.

• WWF World Tag Team Champions The British Bulldogs (w/Capt. Lou Albano) vs. Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff (w/Freddie Blassie) – 2/3 Falls
  

The Bulldogs control Volkoff to start, but all it takes is for Volkoff to catch Davey Boy coming off the ropes for a hotshot to turn the tide. Sheik tags in and gives DBS a back suplex to set up the CAMEL CLUTCH and DBS gives up! (1:30 Sheik/Volkoff – 1 Bulldogs – 0) In the second fall, Sheik and Volkoff continue to control Davey Boy. DBS gets a desperation sunset flip on Volkoff and Sheik distracts the ref so that there’s no count to further piss off the crowd. Sheik hits the gutwrench suplex for two. Volkoff slams DBS near the ropes and covers for two, but he thinks he’s won and turns away to celebrate, so Davey Boy rolls him up for 1-2-3. (5:56 Sheik/Volkoff – 1 Bulldogs – 1) We finally get the answer as to why Davey Boy Smith is wrestling the whole match. Dynamite Kid has an injured knee that’s still bothering him from WrestleMania. Sheik works a Boston crab, but DBS makes the ropes. Volkoff works a backbreaker, but Davey Boy fires back and gives Sheik the RUNNING POWERSLAM out of nowhere. Cover, 1-2-NO! Dynamite finally gets a tag and Sheik goes right after the knee, but then works a bear hug? He then goes for the win with the CAMEL CLUTCH, but Dynamite won’t give up. Davey Boy draws Volkoff in and breaks up the clutch. He then switches with Dynamite and cradles Sheik for 1-2-3. (9:08 Bulldogs – 2 Sheik/Volkoff – 1) Uhh, different color tights there, blind ref. But hey, that’s the ’80s for ya. Sheik and Volkoff seemed to be feeling it here. **¾

Take us out, Phil Collins!

Final Thoughts: I used to think this was a pretty cool episode of SNME, but it doesn’t appear to be as great to me anymore. Then again I used to think a lot of things were pretty cool that aren’t now. I would’ve probably liked to have seen a WrestleMania rematch between the Bulldogs and the Dream Team instead, but Sheik and Volkoff didn’t disappoint either. I’ll go with thumbs in the middle for SNME #6. Recommended, if you can find it.
