NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Champions: The Fabulous Freebirds (12/25/1982)
NWA American Heavyweight Champion: Kevin Von Erich (3/4/1983)
NWA American Tag Team Champions: The Fabulous Freebirds (11/26/1982)
NWA Texas Heavyweight Champion: Jimmy Garvin (3/4/1983)
Your host is Bill Mercer.
David Von Erich stops by to tell us that he will be in the corner of his brothers tonight against the Fabulous Freebirds. He also begs all the people watching to write in and tell World Class that they want to see him get a rematch with Jimmy Garvin over the Texas title. What, no tweets?
- Non-title match: NWA Texas Heavyweight Champion Jimmy Garvin (w/Sunshine) vs. Jose Lothario
Garvin drives the fans crazy by ducking Lothario to start. Definitely working the “Gorgeous” style. They just keep trading basic holds and whenever Lothario starts to get the upper hand, Garvin heads out to let Sunshine check on his hair. You know, make sure he still looks pretty. Lothario stuns Garvin with a big shinbreaker. It evidently didn’t hurt him too bad because he uses the same knee to catch Lothario coming off the ropes to turn the tide. The crowd cheers on Lothario while he’s stuck in a chinlock, but then drills Garvin with a beautiful backbreaker. Garvin begs off and grabs both legs to trip up Lothario for a pinfall, but Lothario keeps rolling him over until they end up near the ropes where Garvin gets a little help to score the cheap pinfall. (12:00) Lothario gets a little payback punching Garvin out to the floor. A little boring at times, but I liked where they were headed. The finish fit the story. **
Bill Mercer visits with Skandor Akbar and Devastation Inc. King Kong Bundy wants a Rolls Royce and it’s only $80,000. CAN HE HAVE IT, POP? CAN HE? It’s no big deal to Akbar. Being a big Arab oil man, he tells Mercer that he’s dropped the price $5 per barrel so that no other country can undercut him, but will raise the prices for the consumers. That’s enough to get ALL the rubes mad. Akbar also mentions to Mercer that if his wrestlers are not successful, then his negotiations with OPEC will not be taken seriously. Great Kabuki will take care of Tola Yatsu, King Kong Bundy (who Akbar calls the *new* eighth wonder of the world), and now Kamala the Ugandan Giant. Akbar drops a bomb on us spilling the beans on his negotiations with NWA world champion Ric Flair. Mercer wants Akbar to confirm that, but Akbar tells him to believe as he wishes. So mysterious!
Back to live action, Bill Mercer gets a response from Arman Hussein concerning General Akbar’s comments. He seems very confident that his man Tola Yatsu can handle everything thrown at him by Devastation Inc.
- King Kong Bundy vs. Tola Yatsu (w/Arman Hussein)
I’m confused about Yatsu. He’s supposed to be a ninja, but he’s stretching like a sumo before the bell, and then goes into a karate routine. Nothing but armbars to start thanks to Bundy. They trade blows, but then Hussein throws in the kendo stick to Yatsu, who then nails Bundy for the DQ. (5:41) Weird feud as I don’t think the people know who to cheer at all. You would think they would cheer Yatsu, but then he gets himself disqualified. ¾*
Due to popular demand, Mercer replays the “Kamala the Ugandan Giant” introduction video filmed in Jerry Lawler’s backyard. It actually is quite terrifying.
- Non-Title Texas Tornado Match: NWA American Tag Team Champions Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy (w/Buddy Roberts) vs. Kevin & Kerry Von Erich (w/David Von Erich)
Both teams use the same strategy: throw one guy out and double-team the other. Hayes is the first to go leaving Gordy to take a double-hiptoss and a double-dropkick. The Freebirds take turns dropping the Von Erichs from Gordy’s shoulders onto the knee of Hayes. These double-team moments are short-lived though, so the Von Erichs wind up just working together inside the ring. They whip the Freebirds together, but then Kevin gets yanked out to the floor by Gordy. It’s just all kinds of chaos here. Speaking of working in tandem, the Von Erichs apply STEREO CLAW HOLDS to the Freebirds. Gordy breaks Kevin’s clawhold by heaving him over the top rope. After taking such a tumble, the Freebirds can double-team the crap out of Kerry. The crowd starts to shriek until Kevin makes the save. Kevin throws out Gordy, which pisses off Buddy Roberts to the point he jumps into the ring. From the other side of the ring, here comes David Von Erich. There’s just too much anarchy and the ref throws the match out. (7:07) There’s just not much that I don’t like that they do. Chemistry personified. Just a fantastic “wild west” seven minutes. ***
Bill Mercer speaks with King Kong Bundy before we go. Great Kabuki stands behind them as Bundy hypes up a “kendo stick” match between Kabuki and Yatsu. In closing, Bundy says that Kamala is coming and wrestling will never be the SAME.
