WWWF: All Star Wrestling
September 13, 1975
Hamburg, PA
Hamburg Fieldhouse
Your current WWWF champions are as follows:
WWWF Heavyweight Champion: Bruno Sammartino (12/10/1973)
WWWF World Tag Team Champions: The Blackjacks (8/26/1975)
Pop Culture #1s of the Time:
#1 Movie of the Week: Jaws starring Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss
#1 Song of the Week: Rhinestone Cowboy by Glen Campbell
#1 TV Show of 75-76 Season: All in the Family starring Carroll O’Connor
The following wrestling exhibition requires discretionary viewer participation. This intro would sound a lot jazzier if these clips were set to the similar Barney Miller theme song.
Your host is Vince McMahon and Antonino Rocca. Apparently, Rocca is one big mark for Tony Parisi.
- Superstar Billy Graham (w/The Grand Wizard) vs. Tom Stanton
Wizard and Graham go through the deal where Wizard has to try REALLY hard to peel that tie dye t-shirt off, ya know, because of the serious muscles. We are only weeks in Graham’s first WWWF run and Vince has already predicted Graham could be the next WWWF champion. Lots of pounding offense – showing off his power. Those aren’t just glamour muscles, folks. He lets up off a few pinfall attempts just to do more damage and show off. The BEARHUG puts away Stanton. (3:57) Graham continues to put the boots to Stanton clear after the bell just for fun.
- The Blackjacks (w/Captain Lou Albano) vs. Buddy Porter and Bud Sawyer
Got a couple of Carolina buddies here to take on these Texans. The Blackjacks are announced as the new WWWF tag champs after defeating Dominic DeNucci and Pat Barrett in an apparent nefarious fashion according to Vince and Antonino. Captain Lou tries to get himself heard on TV by yelling next to the announcers table. Lanza and Mulligan tear at Porter’s arm for a while. Eventually, Lanza applies the CLAWHOLD to Porter and puts him out for the win at 5:11.
After the break, the Grand Wizard talks up Superstar Billy Graham while he poses those muscles. I’m sure Vince is JIZZING himself right now. Wizard does a great job and then lets Graham run his mouth cutting a promo. I was wondering why Graham had a mouthpiece, but it actually works really well. Graham brings up Bruno Sammartino calling him out of shape – basically past his prime and worn out.
- Baron Mikel Scicluna vs. Manuel Miranda
Another beat-em-up as Scicluna wins with a jumping knee drop to the throat in 3:34.
- Frank Monte vs. Francisco Flores
This was like a Pedro Morales and Don Muraco match, but obviously on a much smaller scale. Monte gives a beating to set up the fiery Latin comeback. It’s very 70s, which I realize the absurdity of saying that during a recap of a show in 1975. They end up brawling on the apron until the ref counts them both out at 6:01. *½
- Louis Cerdan & Tony Parisi vs. Waldo Von Erich & Bugsy McGraw (w/Freddie Blassie and Captain Lou Albano)
Cerdan and Parisi are a couple of Italian babyfaces who look and dress alike. Bugsy here – clearly okay with partnering with a neo Nazi – is not the lovable goof we will see in Texas and Florida in the years to come. Parisi stays one step ahead of Waldo to start. When both Blassie and Albano get on Parisi and Cerdan’s nerves, they go out and bring ANDRE THE FREAKING GIANT back with them. Once things settle, Cerdan gets a hot tag after Waldo misses a bombs away flying knee. He tries tying up Waldo’s leg when Bugsy gets a tag. As Cerdan tries to work on Bugsy’s leg, Albano sneaks in and delivers a forearm shiver to Cerdan. That brings Andre over to scare away Captain Lou. More cheating ensues. Andre gets his mitts on Bugsy though. Meanwhile, Parisi gives Von Erich an atomic drop, but misses an elbow drop. Tag to Bugsy, he misses a splash coming off the ropes allowing Parisi to reach Cerdan for a tag. CERDAN IS ON FIRE. He takes care of Albano and dropkicks Blassie. The match breaks down with the managers doing some more bumping. This is awesome. The crowd is jacked. Parisi wants an abdominal stretch on Von Erich, but Bugsy breaks up the hold and the match completely falls apart. As we reach the end of the show, Andre is sitting on top of Blassie and Albano piled up together while Cerdan and Parisi are tearing into Bugsy and Waldo at 9:40. **
As usual with these shows, the main events are where the most fun happens. Freddie Blassie and Captain Lou are really the lifeblood of this promotion right now.
Until next time, so long for now.
