Friday Night Smackdown!
June 12, 2009
Jim Ross and Todd Grisham
We go back to Extreme Rules, and the NOT ONE, but TWO World Heavyweight Title changes. We skip the animation as Justin Roberts introduces the new World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk. JR welcomes us to Biloxi as the champ heads to the ring. Punk says he wants to clear up a few things. Ever since he became the World Heavyweight Champion at Extreme Rules he’s heard grumblings that he stole the title from Jeff Hardy. Well he disagrees, and says when he cashed in Money in the Bank last year against Edge no one complained. He says he won his World Title fair and square, and he’s not sorry it went that way. He will defend this World Title to the best of his ability. He will bring respect to the title. Speaking of Jeff Hardy out he comes to a raucous pop. Jeff says Punk didn’t earn that title, but he won’t complain. He says Punk just picked the wrong night to do it. Punk tells Jeff to put himself in that position. He knew the minute that ladder match was booked, the light bulb went off and he decided that was his night. Regardless of who won, that was the decision he made. Hardy says Punk let his fans down, and that he wants his rematch tonight. Suddenly the other part of this saga comes out as a ticked off Edge makes his way down the ramp. He says this is all wrong and if anyone deserves the first rematch its him. Punk says hit the bricks, he beat Jeff for the title, not Edge. Edge says no, he calls the shots here and he says he gets the first shot. Edge says at least Jeff Hardy has his own identity, but Punk? Edge says Punk wants to be….him. Edge says Punk’s life is “straight edge”..named after Edge. He cashed Money in the Bank twice, just like Edge. Edge says Punk will never be like him, ever. Regardless, Edge says he’s getting the first rematch. Jeff snaps, throws Edge out of the ring, then gives Punk a Twist of Fate and a Swanton Bomb. His music cranks up, then GM Teddy Long comes out to solve the problem. Tonight Edge will face Jeff Hardy, and the winner will face CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship Monday night on the special 3-hour “Three For All” Raw. Ok opening promo, but I don’t know where they’re going with it as Jeff’s argument to Punk doesn’t hold water. So cashing in MITB like that is ok, as long as it’s against a heel?
-We return from break and Teddy Long walks in to find Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho there. Jericho wants to know why he doesn’t have a World Title shot tonight? He goes through his resume like always, and Teddy says ok, he can’t fight that argument. So tonight Jericho will face CM Punk. Teddy didn’t mention title match, but that’s irrelevant I guess.
Dolph Ziggler vs. The Great Khali
This may be the match Ziggler turns the corner. Ziggler bails and jaws from the floor. He gets back in the ring and starts kicking Khali’s legs but that doesn’t work, as a head butt takes him down. Ziggler bails again. Ziggler smacks Khali and Khali throws him back in the ring. Khali throws him and smacks him around for a bit, then just lifts Ziggler up and throws him to the ground. Off the ropes and Ziggler with a boot to the face. Khali goes for the Vice Grip and Ziggler bails. Khali finally goes after him and Ziggler grabs Runjin Singh. Khali keeps coming after him, so Ziggler throws Singh at him and Ziggler gets into the ring before Khali does and the count ends. WINNER: Dolph Ziggler by countout (Grade: 1)

Alicia Fox distracts Melina outside as she goes for a move and McCool hits that sweet facebreaker for the 3 count. WINNER: Michelle McCool & Layla (Grade: 2)
Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas vs. John Morrison & R-Truth
R-Truth does his schtick then rips the WGTT for a bit. Morrison starts with Shelton and they lock up, but Shelton shoves Truth. That distracts Morrison & the ref which gives Haas a chance to cheap shot Morrison and Shelton takes over. Shelton with right hands but Morrison blocks one, then spins out of a bulldog into a Russian leg sweep. Morrison with a spinning leg drop for 2. Tag to Truth and he starts working Shelton over. Shelton ducks the Fame-asser and goes on Truth with right hands. Shelton goes for a splash and Truth raises the knees. Truth kicks Haas off which gives Shelton a chance to hop to the top and hit a sweet superplex. Truth hits the deck and we go to break. We return with Shelton in a chinlock but Truth powers out. Off the ropes and Shelton with a Samoan Drop for 2. Tag to Haas and a nice move where Shelton slams Truth on Haas’ knee for a 2 count. Haas whips Truth hard into the corner for a 2 count. Haas with a chinlock and a knee to the back. Haas with a knee lift into a belly-to-belly suplex for 2. Haas with a front facelock on Truth. Truth trying to fight into his corner but Haas takes him down with an anklelock. Truth splits to avoid a clothesline but gets caught in mid-air. Haas tries a sunset flip but Truth gets out of it and finally tag Morrison. He gets all hero tag on Haas, and drop kicks Shelton off the apron. The Springboard Kick gets 2. Shelton breaks the count and Truth airplane spins him out of the ring. Haas throws Truth out of the ring, but Morrison hits both Moonlight Drive and Starship Pain for the 3 count. WINNERS: John Morrison & R-Truth (Grade: 2.5)
Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho vs. World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk
Jericho takes the mic and continues his vitrol about how he’s honest and the fans are cheaters. He says by unmasking Rey Mysterio at Extreme Rules, he’s done Rey a favor by lifting the burden of shadows. Jericho says Rey is hiding in shame, but he will return to thank him for setting him free. JR applauds Punk for doing what he did. Maybe JR will swing heel a little? Punk goes to the Bret Hart pink and black now. Punk with a headlock to start. Jericho with an overhand wristlock. Punk powers out and goes back to the headlock. Punk with a reverse elbow, a clothesline and a front facelock. Jericho reverses and tries for the Walls but Punk pushes out. Punk grabs Jericho and goes for the Go To Sleep but he ducks out of the ring and contemplates as we go to break. We return and Punk goes for some weird submission on the ropes. Punk with a high cross body for 2. Punk with some low knees but he goes for a back drop and Jericho drapes him over the ropes. Jericho with a springboard drop kick and Punk hits the floor. Punk takes his time getting back into the ring and Jericho continues the pounding, now with a chinlock. Punk powers up and whips Jericho into the corner. Jericho with a drop toe hold on Punk’s charge and Punk hits the turnbuckle. Jericho charges and Punk bails. Punk with kicks and a flying kick. Punk with the flying knee/bulldog combo for 2. Punk whips Jericho into the corner but Jericho catches him and hits the Lionsault for 2. Jericho with some forearms and a reverse elbow. Punk with a powerslam out of nowhere for 2. Punk with kicks but Jericho blocks the last kick and hits an Enziguiri for 2. Jericho goes for the bulldog but Punk pushes off. Punk gets Jericho up for the GTS but Jericho blocks it and cranks the Walls. Punk finally gets to the ropes and Jericho breaks. Jericho charges and Punk back drops him to the apron. Jericho goes to the top and Punk with a flying kick. Punk follows up top and hits a superplex for 2. Both men start exchanging rights but Jericho hits the Codebreaker out of nowhere. He goes for the pin but Punk’s foot hit the rope at 2. Jericho kicks the leg away and continues kicking. He charges and Punk hits the big kick. One Go To Sleep later and Punk wins the match. Really good match. WINNER: CM Punk (Grade: 3)
Macho Madness: The Randy Savage Ultimate Collection. Get it. Except for Maria’s atrocious co-hosting, it’s a great anthology. Plus who really gets sick of Pomp and Circumstance?
We go to the Raw Rebound, which includes the beatdown of Batista by Legacy, and the return of THE GAME.
#1 contenders match: Jeff Hardy vs. Edge
To repeat, the winner faces CM Punk Monday night on Raw for the World Heavyweight Championship. As we begin CM Punk comes back out. He heads to the broadcast table with JR & Todd. They lock up and push off. Jeff’s selling the shoulder injury. Jeff with right hands, and a whip into the corner. Jeff with a body slam and a knee to the back. Edge with a low knee and he takes over with elbows and stomps. More stomps as Punk says Straight Edge isn’t the most popular thing, but it’s what he is. Edge whips Jeff in the corner but misses the shoulder block. He rolls onto the floor, Jeff’s down in the ring and we’ll be back. We return and Jeff is working Edge’s right arm over. Jeff goes for a whip but Edge reverses and hits a big boot. Edge works on Jeff with chokes and stomps. Off the ropes and Jeff goes for a splash but Jeff ducks and Edge goes into the ropes. Jeff goes for a suplex but Edge hits the knee and Edge with a chop block. Jeff’s knee gets worked over. Edge with almost an Indian Death Lock. Punk’s definitely sneaking heel as he says if he faces Jeff Monday night, the match would be as quick as their match at Extreme Rules. Jeff with a shoulder tackle and a clothesline. Jeff goes for WITW but Edge hits him in the corner and Jeff’s hooked upside down. We go to a second break with Jeff handing upside down and Edge taking a powder. We return and Edge is stomping Edge in the middle of the ring. Edge keeps working the left leg over, and Edge gets him in the corner and crotches him with the post. Both men are now outside and Edge keeps pounding on the leg. Both are now back in the ring, and Edge still focuses on the leg. Edge goes to the top rope but Jeff catches him and hits the DDT for 2. Jeff off the ropes and we have a double clothesline. Both get to their feet and Jeff with a Russian Leg Sweep for 2. Jeff with a body slam, and off comes the tank top. Jeff goes to the second rope and hits a leg drop for 2. Jeff with a reverse atomic drop but Edge blocks the leg split and tries to ratchet the Sharpshooter and does but quickly Jeff hooks the ropes. Jeff with a shoulder block and gets a sunset flip for 2. Crowd’s staying with it move for move. Jeff goes for the Twist of Fate but Edge blocks, then Edge misses a spear and Jeff gets a roll-up for 2. Jeff hits the Twist of Fate, then slowly goes to the top rope but Edge bails, so Jeff hits a plancha outside. Both are outside and Edge throws Hardy into Punk, so Punk goes into the ring and attacks Edge, which calls for the bell. Jeff hits the Twist of Fate on Edge, then Punk gets Jeff with the Go To Sleep. Punk’s music hits, and we now goes backstage where Tiffany and Teddy Long are talking. Teddy decides to make Monday night’s match a triple threat: Edge vs. Jeff Hardy vs. CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship. With that we’re out!
