Friday Night Smackdown!
June 12, 2009
Biloxi, Mississippi
Jim Ross and Todd Grisham

We go back to Extreme Rules, and the NOT ONE, but TWO World Heavyweight Title changes. We skip the animation as Justin Roberts introduces the new World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk. JR welcomes us to Biloxi as the champ heads to the ring. Punk says he wants to clear up a few things. Ever since he became the World Heavyweight Champion at Extreme Rules he’s heard grumblings that he stole the title from Jeff Hardy. Well he disagrees, and says when he cashed in Money in the Bank last year against Edge no one complained. He says he won his World Title fair and square, and he’s not sorry it went that way. He will defend this World Title to the best of his ability. He will bring respect to the title. Speaking of Jeff Hardy out he comes to a raucous pop. Jeff says Punk didn’t earn that title, but he won’t complain. He says Punk just picked the wrong night to do it. Punk tells Jeff to put himself in that position. He knew the minute that ladder match was booked, the light bulb went off and he decided that was his night. Regardless of who won, that was the decision he made. Hardy says Punk let his fans down, and that he wants his rematch tonight. Suddenly the other part of this saga comes out as a ticked off Edge makes his way down the ramp. He says this is all wrong and if anyone deserves the first rematch its him. Punk says hit the bricks, he beat Jeff for the title, not Edge. Edge says no, he calls the shots here and he says he gets the first shot. Edge says at least Jeff Hardy has his own identity, but Punk? Edge says Punk wants to be….him. Edge says Punk’s life is “straight edge”..named after Edge. He cashed Money in the Bank twice, just like Edge. Edge says Punk will never be like him, ever. Regardless, Edge says he’s getting the first rematch. Jeff snaps, throws Edge out of the ring, then gives Punk a Twist of Fate and a Swanton Bomb. His music cranks up, then GM Teddy Long comes out to solve the problem. Tonight Edge will face Jeff Hardy, and the winner will face CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship Monday night on the special 3-hour “Three For All” Raw. Ok opening promo, but I don’t know where they’re going with it as Jeff’s argument to Punk doesn’t hold water. So cashing in MITB like that is ok, as long as it’s against a heel?

-We return from break and Teddy Long walks in to find Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho there. Jericho wants to know why he doesn’t have a World Title shot tonight? He goes through his resume like always, and Teddy says ok, he can’t fight that argument. So tonight Jericho will face CM Punk. Teddy didn’t mention title match, but that’s irrelevant I guess.

Dolph Ziggler vs. The Great Khali

This may be the match Ziggler turns the corner. Ziggler bails and jaws from the floor. He gets back in the ring and starts kicking Khali’s legs but that doesn’t work, as a head butt takes him down. That distracts Morrison & the ref which gives Haas a chance to cheap shot Morrison and Shelton takes over. Shelton breaks the count and Truth airplane spins him out of the ring. Haas throws Truth out of the ring, but Morrison hits both Moonlight Drive and Starship Pain for the 3 count. WINNERS: John Morrison & R-Truth (Grade: 2.5)

Intercontinental Champion Chris Jericho vs. World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk

Jericho takes the mic and continues his vitrol about how he’s honest and the fans are cheaters. He says by unmasking Rey Mysterio at Extreme Rules, he’s done Rey a favor by lifting the burden of shadows. Jericho says Rey is hiding in shame, but he will return to thank him for setting him free. JR applauds Punk for doing what he did. Maybe JR will swing heel a little? Punk goes to the Bret Hart pink and black now. Punk with a headlock to start. Jericho with an overhand wristlock. Punk powers out and goes back to the headlock. Punk with a reverse elbow, a clothesline and a front facelock. Jericho reverses and tries for the Walls but Punk pushes out. Punk grabs Jericho and goes for the Go To Sleep but he ducks out of the ring and contemplates as we go to break. We return and Punk goes for some weird submission on the ropes. Jericho goes to the top and Punk with a flying kick. Punk follows up top and hits a superplex for 2. Both men start exchanging rights but Jericho hits the Codebreaker out of nowhere. He goes for the pin but Punk’s foot hit the rope at 2. Jericho kicks the leg away and continues kicking. He charges and Punk hits the big kick. One Go To Sleep later and Punk wins the match. Really good match. WINNER: CM Punk (Grade: 3)

Macho Madness: The Randy Savage Ultimate Collection. Get it. Except for Maria’s atrocious co-hosting, it’s a great anthology. Plus who really gets sick of Pomp and Circumstance?

We go to the Raw Rebound, which includes the beatdown of Batista by Legacy, and the return of THE GAME.

#1 contenders match: Jeff Hardy vs. Edge

To repeat, the winner faces CM Punk Monday night on Raw for the World Heavyweight Championship. As we begin CM Punk comes back out. He heads to the broadcast table with JR & Todd. They lock up and push off. Jeff’s selling the shoulder injury. Jeff with right hands, and a whip into the corner. Jeff with a body slam and a knee to the back. Edge with a low knee and he takes over with elbows and stomps. More stomps as Punk says Straight Edge isn’t the most popular thing, but it’s what he is. Punk’s definitely sneaking heel as he says if he faces Jeff Monday night, the match would be as quick as their match at Extreme Rules. Jeff with a shoulder tackle and a clothesline. Jeff goes for WITW but Edge hits him in the corner and Jeff’s hooked upside down. We go to a second break with Jeff handing upside down and Edge taking a powder. We return and Edge is stomping Edge in the middle of the ring. Edge keeps working the left leg over, and Edge gets him in the corner and crotches him with the post. Both men are now outside and Edge keeps pounding on the leg. Both are now back in the ring, and Edge still focuses on the leg. Edge goes to the top rope but Jeff catches him and hits the DDT for 2. Jeff off the ropes and we have a double clothesline. Both get to their feet and Jeff with a Russian Leg Sweep for 2. Jeff with a body slam, and off comes the tank top.
