- Samoa Joe vs. Elix Skipper (w/Simon Diamond)
JOE! JOE! JOE! He kills Skipper with his usual in a strong Spike TV debut in 2:18. ½*
- NWA World Tag Team Champions The Naturals vs. America’s Most Wanted
I’m assuming Jimmy Hart is not conspicuous by his absence since he’s a babyface here. Inconspicuous? I don’t know. AMW attack at the bell, but the Naturals clean house and wipe them out as Stevens backdrops Douglas on top of them. Stevens ups the crazy by giving AMW a Shooting Star Press. While the Naturals high-five each other, Gail Kim comes out to regroup AMW. Commercials! When we return, the Naturals control until Gail Kim trips up Douglas causing him to give chase after her only to be trapped with a SECRET HIDING PLACE belt shot from Harris to bust him open. Back in, Douglas makes the weakened bloody comeback with a high knee and hot tags Stevens. He delivers a Death Valley Driver to Harris for two. AMW tries for a Hart Attack, but Douglas pulls out Harris. He decks Douglas and while Gail Kim distracts the ref, Harris nails Stevens with one of the tag belts. Cover by Storm, 1-2-NO! Harris clotheslines the ref by accident. Andy Douglas gets FIRED UP because of the blood running down his face. With that, Harris receives the NATURAL DISASTER. No ref, obviously. Gail Kim flies in off the top with a headscissors and hits Storm by mistake. That did not go well in any form or fashion. The Naturals grab Gail Kim for their finisher, but Jeff Jarrett sneaks in and low blows the caboose. I should mention that the ref is now conscious and vertical, but doesn’t see a thing. As Jarrett slumps to the floor, Stevens wants some of him. However, he turns back around and gets a beer bottle smashed over his head by Storm. Harris is put on top for the win and the tag titles. (9:50) They had to get those belts off the Naturals. I see no reason for the Naturals to have had the belts as long as they did. Especially considering AMW was the best tag team running at that time. That may not be the best point ever made when you think about how dead tag teams were then though. Nevertheless, I’m glad to see them with the belts again. Incredibly overbooked, but it got the point across. **½
- Bobby Roode (w/Coach Scott D’Amore) vs. Ron Killings (w/BG James)
Like a champ, Roode kicks Killings for dancing. Shoulderblocks are exchanged and Truth hits the big hiptoss. To the floor, Killings busts out the somersault plancha. Back in, Roode stops Truth up top and then follows with a knee drop off the second rope. Roode buries a couple knees into Truth and delivers a back suplex. Out comes Kip James. He tells Tenay and West he’s going to settle this issue with his “brother” BG James once and for all. Well, now seems like hardly the time. They cut to Konnan flipping out watching this from the back. He’s hanging out with a shirtless Apolo for some reason. Anyways, the New Age Outlaws start talking back and forth until Konnan comes down to get up in Kip’s face. Truth finally sees what is happening and shoves Kip, which triggers a little scuffle. Here comes security to ruin this good time. Apparently the ref is involved in that as well because A-1 and Eric Young appear trying to attack Killings. While D’Amore slides the hockey stick to Roode, he gets pulled into the ring. Stupid Ron. Roode whacks him with the stick and here comes the ref to count the pin. (5:09) Of course. You better believe there will be HELL TO PAY this Sunday at Bound for Glory! ¾*
In the back, our main event heel team meets with Shane Douglas. Monty says he doesn’t want to hunt with Jeff, but instead he wants to HUNT Jeff for that NWA world title.
- Jeff Jarrett, Monty Brown & Abyss (w/James Mitchell) vs. AJ Styles, Lance Hoyt & Jeff Hardy
Hoyt handles Abyss okay, but then tags Hardy who gets stuck on the wrong side of town for a bit. Hot tag to AJ and he is a HOUSE OF FIRE. Best Dropkick in the Business to Abyss and the Pele Kick on Jarrett. Then we see pescados one after the other from the good guys. Commercials! AND WE’RE BACK! AJ is still on fire as he punishes Jarrett with a ten-count corner punch and drops Abyss with a tornado DDT. Abyss then tries launching AJ, but he sends him into Monty to knock him off the apron. Styles Clash on Abyss fails, but AJ still avoids the Stroke. He turns around into a boot from Abyss though and then a clothesline from Jarrett sends him down. Bossman straddle and uppercut from Jarrett. Meanwhile, Cassidy Riley puts on a headset to deliver a message from Raven. He says that Raven will be in the building at Bound for Glory. NEVERMORE! In the ring, Monty and Abyss take turns destroying AJ from corner to corner. Tag to Jarrett, there’s a double-KO. Jarrett tags both men for some reason. While they fight over who is legal, AJ springboards onto them and pushes them back to tag both Hoyt and Hardy. BLACK HOLE SLAM to Hoyt. Cover, 1-2-NO! Hardy makes the save. Twist of Fate and the SWANTON BOMB on Abyss gets two as well. Monty levels Hardy with a backbreaker-fallaway slam combo, but stands up into a big boot from Hoyt. In comes Jarrett to stop the pin. While Abyss pulls out Hoyt, AJ tries a springboard body press on Jarrett, but he rolls through and calls for the FIGURE-FOUR. Styles stops that with an enziguri and gives Jarrett the suplex into a neckbreaker. I love that. He wants the SPIRAL TAP, but James Mitchell distracts the ref while Christopher Daniels shoves him off the top. While Jarrett still wants the Stroke, Monty shoots in and steals away the moment with the POUNCE on AJ for the win. (13:27) Just a fun main event to hype their biggest show of the year. Jarrett likes what he sees in Monty for some reason. Shouldn’t he feel a little threatened instead of excited? Hoyt takes Monty to the floor while Christopher Daniels puts AJ in a Koji Clutch so Jarrett and Abyss can stomp him real good. Hardy and Sabu try to save, but that just ends up with Rhino running out so Tenay can remind us of Monsters Ball. Big Kev starts to make his way down, but he walks kind of slow and WE’RE OUT OF TIME! ***
