WWF: Monday Night Raw (04.17.95)

Monday Night Raw
April 17, 1995
Poughkeepsie, NY
Mid-Hudson Civic Center

The current WWF champs were as follows:
World Champion: Diesel (11/26/1994)
Intercontinental Champion: Jeff Jarrett (1/22/1995)
World Tag Team Champions: Owen Hart & Yokozuna (4/2/1995)
Women’s Champion: Alundra Blayze (4/3/1995)

Yesterday on the Action Zone, Ted DiBiase introduced Psycho Sid into the Million Dollar Corporation, confirming that DiBiase paid off Sid to destroy Diesel’s buddy Shawn Michaels in the hopes of a WWF title match. Brilliant!

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler.

  • Jean-Pierre Lafitte vs. Duke Droese

This is Lafitte’s Raw debut. He’s certainly no stranger to Raw though. You know him best as Pierre from the Quebecers tag team. Back and forth stuff to start. Droese eventually misses a corner charge and Lafitte takes over with a flying legdrop for two. Lafitte follows with a Bossman straddle and then ties Droese up in the ropes for a couple crossbody blocks. Droese tries to come back with a sunset flip, but Lafitte stands strong and punches Droese in the face as we go to commercial. When we return, Droese fights out of a chinlock into a double-KO. Lafitte comes off the middle rope, but flies down into a boot. Here comes Droese! BAAAACK BODY DROP! He hits a powerslam and heads up top, but misses the splash. LE CANNONBALL is enough to put away Droese. (8:30 shown) Pretty decent debut. **

They show Sid’s introduction into the Million Dollar Corporation. Something of note, Bigelow stands off to the side from the rest of the crew.

  • Doink the Clown (w/Dink) vs. Roy Raymond

This is the perfect opportunity for Lawler to hype “Duckman”. Vince announces that since Diesel is to blame for Lawrence Taylor’s presence at the Royal Rumble, he has agreed to give Bam Bam a WWF title shot next week on Raw. Doink gives Raymond the WHOOPIE CUSHION to squash him (literally) at 3:21.

Todd Pettingell hypes WWF In Your House. Outside of the chance for you to win a house, there isn’t that much to promote just yet. The event is $14.95, which Todd describes as the same cost of taking a family of four out to the movies. That’s actually not a bad way to justify purchasing this PPV. Skip out on going to the movies that weekend and watch the PPV instead. The main event will be WWF champ Diesel against Psycho Sid so long as Diesel is still WWF champion after facing Bam Bam Bigelow next week, which presumably could cause some problems in the Million Dollar Corporation.

  • WWF Tag Team Champions Owen Hart & Yokozuna (w/Jim Cornette & Mr. Fuji) vs. The 1-2-3 Kid & Bob Holly

Hammerlocks and such to start between the Kid and Owen. Tag to Holly, double BAAACK BODY DROP. Owen escapes an armbar though and levels Holly with a knee to the gut. Yoko tags in, but telegraphs a backdrop and gets his head slammed to the mat. Holly tries to come off the ropes, but Owen pulls the top rope down to send him crashing on the floor. While the ref is with Yoko and Cornette, Owen slams Holly into the ringpost. Back in, Owen works the back and cuts the ring in half. Commercials! When we come back, Yoko grabs the nerve hold. When Holly starts to get up, Yoko dumps him over the top again. That creates another opportunity for shenanigans by Owen. Back in the ring, Holly surprises Owen with an inside cradle for two. Owen wants a superplex, but Holly falls on top for 1-2-NO! Enziguri kick puts down Holly though for a nearfall. Tag to Yoko, he works over Holly a little bit. Back to Owen, Holly fights out a chinlock into a double-KO. HOT TAG TO KID! He explodes on Yoko with kicks. Somersault plancha takes out Owen! He takes flight on Yoko, but he’s caught and drilled with a belly to belly suplex. That’ll do. Cover by Yoko, 1-2-3. (13:44 shown) Loved that finish. Kid does all that work only to get snuffed out REAL quick by Yokozuna. **½

The Undertaker tells us not to drink and drive. The day I take advice from a dead man…

  • Henry O. Godwinn vs. Rich Myers

Cornfed from Duckman calls into the program. For those of you who don’t know, he is a cartoon pig with a Jack Webb-voice and claims to know 200 ways to kill a man. He’s quite interesting, I tell you. Godwinn beats Myers with the SLOP DROP at 2:00. The camera takes a long look at Godwinn’s slop bucket and Cornfed asks Vince and King to save it for him.

NEXT WEEK: WWF champ Diesel faces Bam Bam Bigelow in a title match! Plus, Bertha Faye makes her debut. You jump the rail, break the nose of the WWF Women’s champion, and you get yourself a job. Only in wrestling, folks.
