WWF: Monday Night Raw (04.22.96)

Monday Night Raw
April 22, 1996
San Bernardino, CA
Orange Pavilion

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Shawn Michaels (3/31/96)
Intercontinental Champion: Vacant (4/15/96)
World Tag Team Champions: The Bodydonnas (3/31/96)

I have the Sky Sports shortened version. To play Eric Bischoff here, I want to let all you fans know that here in the World Whining Federation, here’s what I missed: the Godwinns (Seriously? They still think hillbillies are funny or whatever?) beat up a couple of nobodies with the Slop Drop. Hello? It’s called the Scorpion Death Drop. Get with it, guys. Sunny distracts that Hillbilly Jim character (1985 called!) so that her two blonde friends can attack the other hillbillies. Snoozer! Okay, now that we have got that out of the way…

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler.

  • Goldust (w/Marlena) vs. Savio Vega – for the vacant WWF Intercontinental Title

Since Savio CHEATED TO WIN like some people of the Latin decent who will remain nameless tend to do, the IC title is held up and we will decide who the real IC champ is once and for all. Goldust doesn’t play the mind games like he did last week. He gets right to it. Unfortunately, Vega is HOT. Goldust tries to bail again, but Savio brings him back inside. He telegraphs a backdrop and Goldust makes him pay by sliding under him and connecting with an uppercut. Goldust then does something that makes the director go to a shot of the audience. Goldust misses a corner charge, but his trick knee acts up into Savio’s balls. He works the leg for a while and then sits down on a chinlock. Savio’s arm drops once, twice, but not three times. Goldust squashes him and sits back down on the chinlock as we go to a split-screen interview with the Ultimate Warrior. He spits out the usual insanity. Goldust tries to post Savio’s balls, but Vega pulls him into the ringpost instead. Wait a second, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Ted DiBiase appear in the entryway. Inside the ring, the Savio Vega comeback begins. Goldust wants to end this quick with the CURTAIN CALL, but Vega flips out and delivers the CARIBBEAN KICK! Slow cover, 1-2-NO! While Marlena is on the apron, Savio surprises Goldust with the O’Connor roll, but no count. As Goldust kicks out, Vega gets sent into Austin’s Million Dollar belt. Marlena slinks down to the floor as ref Mike Chioda turns back around and counts 1-2-3 on Vega. (10:17 shown) So Goldust regains the belt and everything goes back to the way it was last week. On the other hand, the Austin-Vega feud heats up as I believe a leather strap will enter in very soon. *½

  • Vader (w/Jim Cornette) vs. Fatu

Here is where Vader will be making a difference in how the rest of Fatu’s night will go. Vader bullies Fatu around, but he fires back with a flying splash. Unfortunately, Vader NO-SELLS and turns him inside out with a clothesline. VADERSAULT will do it at 1:55. Vince and King talk like this is the first the WWF has seen of Vader doing a moonsault, so there ya go.

We get a series of clips of the WWF touring Germany. Meanwhile over there, Jake Roberts got into some trouble with Davey Boy Smith. They will square off this Sunday at In Your House. Thankfully, that gets changed to a tag match.

Let Us Take You Back: WrestleMania XII Free For All, the Godwinns met the Bodydonnas in the WWF Tag Team Titles Tournament final. Skip ahead to the Heavenly Bodies-style double-team leg drop gets 1-2-NO! Rocket Launcher misses to set up Henry’s hot tag to Phineas. Just as Phineas goes for the SLOP DROP, Sunny hops up on the apron and shows off her Slammy award-winning buns (which gets edited!). He can’t help but be mesmerized, as she draws him in like a fly heading right into a bug zapper as Skip rolls up Phineas for the 1-2-3. These two teams will meet again this Sunday at In Your House. All of a sudden I miss Todd Pettingell.

  • Mankind vs. Aldo Montoya

This won’t take long. Aldo tries to stick and move. He even tries flying, but Mankind punches him right in the jock strap on the way down. Tree of Woe elbow drop leads to the Pullup Piledriver. That’s all Mankind needs to do to apply the MANDIBLE CLAW for the win at 2:26. So much weird editing going on here.

NEXT WEEK: Ultimate Warrior meets Isaac Yankem DDS! That’ll put butts in the seats.
