WWF: Monday Night Raw (04.29.96)

Monday Night Raw
April 29, 1996
Sioux City, IA
Civic Auditorium

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Shawn Michaels (3/31/96)
Intercontinental Champion: Goldust (4/22/96)
World Tag Team Champions: The Bodydonnas (3/31/96)

Another Sky Sports edit. Sorry, guys. We’ll go back to the original full-length USA network feed for the rest of the year. This week, you miss out on not one, but two matches. This means I must give you the missing results in Eric Bischoff fashion. I want to let all you fans with the clicker in your hand know what is going on over at the World Whining Federation. Steve Austin beats Scotty Taylor with the cobra clutch. Didn’t we fire that guy? What a loser. The New Rockers battle the Hillbillies to a double countout. What’s new about Marty Jannetty? Seriously! Stuck in the 1980s much? Oh my. Are they trying to put us to sleep? What is the deal. Come on. Okay, now that we got that out of the way…

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler.

  • Mankind vs. Bart Gunn

Poor Bart. He’s still waiting on Billy to come back so he can stop losing every week. Mankind rips and tears at Bart’s face until he misses a corner charge and runs shoulder-first into the post. Bart works the shoulder until Mankind threatens him with the MANDIBLE CLAW. A lot of strange editing here. For some reason, they go SUPER WIDE when Mankind hits the running knee down in the corner. Bart makes his comeback with a missile dropkick and a flying elbow drop for 1-2-NO! As they go to the mat, Bart mounts him for punches when Mankind sticks him with the MANDIBLE CLAW for the edited win. (6:43 shown) The real question is how long was this match that it needed to be edited this much. I don’t know, but whatever. ¾*

With no explanation given at least in the copy I’m watching, Let Us Take You Back: In Your House, 4/28/96. The 1-2-3 Kid meets Marc Mero on the Free For All. While they don’t show it in full-length, the recap for the full match is only a click away.

Another bad edit job that kills this interview. Vince brings out Shawn Michaels and Jose Lothario to meet Davey Boy Smith, his wife Diana Hart-Smith, and Jim Cornette in the ring. Shawn first puts himself over for beating Big D last night in the No Holds Barred match until Cornette stops the lovefest and gets down to business. Last night at the PPV, a stage hand gave Diana a note saying that Cornette was in trouble backstage. When she left to help Corny, Shawn Michaels was waiting to proposition her. Shawn replies telling Diana not to flatter herself. She responds with a slap across the face. Lots more would follow including a beatdown on Shawn at the hands of Davey Boy, but it gets cut.

Backstage down in the boiler room, Jim Ross speaks with Mankind. He isn’t so much surprised that his Mandible Claw (or as he put it, “these fingers”) destroyed the Undertaker, but just surprised at how easy it was. Be careful there, Jim. That guy is a wild one.

  • The Ultimate Warrior vs. Isaac Yankem DDS (w/Jerry Lawler)

This will be the last we see of the evil dentist on Monday Night Raw. While using an extension cord, Lawler still does color commentary despite being in Yankem’s corner. Same old stuff from WOYAH. Punches, clotheslines, shoulderblocks, and the WARRIOR SPLASH for the win at 1:39 shown. Needless to say, Lawler is pretty upset. And WOYAH celebrates to close the show.

NEXT WEEK: The Undertaker battles Owen Hart while the 1-2-3 Kid gets his rematch with Marc Mero!
