NWA American Tag Team Champions: The Fabulous Freebirds (11/26/1982)
NWA Texas Heavyweight Champion: Jimmy Garvin (3/4/1983)
Your host is Bill Mercer.
Before we get to the ring, Mercer talks with General Skandor Akbar. He introduces some footage of his Great Kabuki rehabilitating himself mentally, physically, and spiritually back in his home land of Japan. Mercer wants to know more about Kamala. We get a video package for him looking like a real uncivilized individual. Akbar says he’s 6’7” and 375 pounds, but the voiceover guy says Kamala is 6’9” and 385 pounds. I guess the camera does add ten pounds…and two inches. His face paint is very different than what we remember from other territories, but it’s WAY more terrifying the way it is designed here in my opinion. Akbar mentions how no one wants to sign a contract to wrestle this guy. Who can blame them!
- Iceman King Parsons vs. The Magic Dragon (w/Arman Hussein)
From great prominence to now just managing Tola Yatsu and the Magic Dragon, Hussein has certainly not where he was six months ago. Test of strength early on ends with Parsons stepping on the hands. Mostly punches and chops are exchanged for the next several minutes. Next thing you know, Parsons hits the BUTT BUTT for the win. (5:32) So Parsons is moving right up the ladder here in World Class in a short amount of time. Hussein tries to jump the Iceman, but gets punched and takes the BUTT BUTT out to the floor. ¾*
Before the next match happens, General Skandor Akbar and King Kong Bundy are in the ring issuing a challenge to Arman Hussein and Tola Yatsu. While Yatsu is ready for anything, Hussein seems to NO-SELL the whole ordeal.
- Tola Yatsu (w/Arman Hussein) vs. Al Madril
Madril grows tired of the chops to start and headlocks Yatsu for the furious right hands. It’s pretty much the only spot he does and he was consistently over for ten years in Dallas. Yatsu fires back with an inverted atomic drop and a running knee drop for two. When he can’t pin Madril with a backbreaker, he changes to the ASIATIC NERVE HOLD~! Everybody from “over there” have earned master’s degrees in that hold. When Madril escapes, he slips trying a crossbody out of the corner, and gets caught in the Stomach Claw for the win. (6:37) Sending a message to Kabuki? Who knows. Glorified squash match here. Afterwards, Arman Hussein is ecstatic feeling like he’s got the greatest wrestler to ever come from Japan to take out Devastation Inc. I think you’re going to need a few more guys before you’re any serious threat again, my friend. ¾*
Bill Mercer meets with “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin and Sunshine by the pool. Garvin reiterates that he will not let anybody film his matches because he doesn’t want anybody saying there are any flaws in his wrestling. He doesn’t seem to mind filming other wrestlers matches in order to look for their flaws though. Why doesn’t he just buy a VCR? I know it’s 1983 and those things are expensive, but come on. You’re supposed to be a rich wrestler and all. Garvin explains that he has come to Dallas to not just bring some class to World Class, but to embarrass the Von Erichs and possibly even the Fabulous Freebirds. He’s also intrigued by that Texas Heavyweight title that David holds too.
- Non-title match: NWA Texas Heavyweight Champion David Von Erich vs. Buddy Roberts
The other Freebirds and Von Erich boys come out to cause a ruckus, but clear out once the match begins. Jimmy Garvin and Sunshine hang around filming the match. David doesn’t like them being at ringside, but doesn’t let them bother him too much. LOTS GOING ON. Roberts punts David up in the corner and then David returns the favor THREE TIMES. Buddy begs off, but gets caught in a headlock. Roberts breaks loose, but gets caught with an atomic drop for two. Back to the headlock. Roberts does what he can to get out of the hold, but winds up caught in the CLAWHOLD. Once that’s started, here comes the Freebirds cavalry for the DQ. (6:50) You better believe this sets up a quick Freebirds/Von Erich battle as the Von Erichs clean house once the damage is done to David’s neck. *½
Afterwards, David Von Erich meets with Bill Mercer to talk about the Freebirds. He sells the neck work done by the Freebirds at the end of the match really well. He’s looking ahead to an NWA world six man tag titles match. He also can’t wait to see his brother Kerry tear Michael Hayes into pieces next week.
NEXT WEEK: Kerry Von Erich gets his hands on Michael Hayes!
