NWA Worldwide
June 16, 1990

The current NWA Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Ric Flair (5/7/1989)
U.S. Champion: Lex Luger (5/22/1989)
World Tag Team Champions: Doom (5/19/1990)
U.S. Tag Team Champions: Midnight Express (5/19/1990)
World Television Champion: Arn Anderson (1/2/1990)

Ric Flair is still the NWA world champ and as he has said his whole career: learn to love it because it’s the best thing going today. WOO!

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone & Sting. YES, Sting. He doesn’t want to talk about Ric Flair – he just wants to watch some TV.

  • The Rock N Roll Express vs. The MOD Squad

A little glorified squash for the RNR Express as they are on their quest for their fifth NWA world tag titles. Not exactly a strong win for sure. Gibson trips up one of the Squad guys from the floor as Morton catches the other one with a crossbody block for the three-count at 6:33.

In the back, Ric Flair, Arn and Ole Anderson run down Sting and the other Dudes with Attitudes. Flair says that Sting will never get another NWA world title shot. Ole points out that Sting is here all by himself without his friends. Maybe the Horsemen will come out and find him. Arn – “You’re a dead man.” AWESOME.

Just in case anyone is worried, Sting tells us he is covered.

  • Barry Windham vs. Joe Deforia

Sting mentions Windham has gained some weight. He said the same thing about the MOD Squad. Just a matter of time until he asks Tony how much some guy weighs. SUPERPLEX ends Deforia in 1:30.

WCW This Week: Tony brings in Mean Mark Callous and his manager Paul E. Dangerously. Paul E runs his mouth off about Junkyard Dog and Paul Orndorff. He dares them to get in the ring with his master of the Heart Punch. Next up, we get to listen to another great mouth in pro wrestling and manager of the NWA U.S. tag champs: Jim Cornette. The proof is in the pudding and the pudding says that the Midnight Express are the best there has ever been. If you think you’re good enough to take their gold, you’re welcome to try.

  • The Freebirds vs. The Southern Boys

Sting points out that the Freebirds are wearing eyeliner like Alice Cooper. All I can think of now is the eyeliner scene from Semi-Pro. Southern Boys look strong to start cleaning house on the Freebirds with STEREO SHOULDER BLOCKS. Interesting that Sting mentions that one of his ways of keeping an eye on the Four Horsemen could be sitting in the crowd eating popcorn and drinking a beer or maybe even watching them from the rafters. Yeah, FROM THE RAFTERS. Armstrong works a headlock on Garvin for a bit. Tag to Hayes, Armstrong gets a sunset flip on him while Garvin has the ref’s attention. Hayes pops Armstrong with that Left Jab to turn the tide. They work him over for a short time, but Armstrong backdrops the DDT away. HOT TAG TO SMOTHERS as the ref has lost all control with everybody in the ring. Here comes Jim Cornette to grab Smothers by the ankle so that Garvin can O’Connor roll him up with the tights for the win. (5:16) Well then. Pretty standard stuff as these two had to have wrestled each other in all kinds of combinations at least two dozen times on TV over the next year and a half. *

  • The Midnight Express (w/Jim Cornette) vs. Mike Hart & Scott Williams

Sting wants to smack all the heels right now. He also wonders what makes Bobby Eaton so “beautiful”? Tony says it’s because he’s got beautiful moves. Then why does Corny call Stan “Sweet”? Let’s just move on, Sting. ROCKET LAUNCHER on Hart gets the win in 2:18.

From the back, the Southern Boys are PISSED at the Freebirds and the Midnight Express. Anytime you want the match, sign on the dotted line, my friends.

ROOS MOVE OF THE WEEK: Lance Russell says some things about the Rock N Roll Express.

  • Lex Luger vs. Barry Horowitz

Barry says he’s going to bust up Luger, but I do not think that will happen. Just as the match gets started, the Four Horsemen (sans Flair) surround the ring. Sting heads down to ringside to stand by Lex. Nobody really makes a move except for Luger as he submits Horowitz to the TORTURE RACK in 1:57. Since Sting is still ultimately useless, Paul Orndorff and Junkyard Dog run down and keep the Horsemen at bay.

  • Paul Orndorff vs. Bubba Rose

Ole has replaced Sting at the announce table. He’s sick of the Dudes with Attitudes interfering in Horsemen business and tell Jim Herd and anybody else that they won’t find anything that Ole has done wrong. Orndorff is GREAT at heel squashes, but this is just ehh. PILEDRIVER at 1:04.

WCW THIS WEEK (part two): Tony introduces us to the Rock N Roll Express. They are all over this program. RNR Express is coming for that fifth NWA world tag championship. They talk like five years ago is forever. Do you realize that just five years ago this month that ShowMiz won the WWE tag titles? Doesn’t seem that long ago, does it? Weird how time flies.

  • Ric Flair & Arn Anderson (w/Sid Vicious) vs. Mike Rotunda & Jerry Price

Sid is a bit overdressed for this program as he’s out in a TUXEDO. When Rotunda gets a little uppity thinking he can beat up Flair and AA, he’s promptly knocked to the floor and given a DDT. Barry Windham joins his crew. Back in the ring, Flair abuses Price like a poor black child and hands him over to Arn for a DDT and the win. (3:07) When they continue the abuse, the Dudes with Attitudes head out to give us a little taste of Sting and Flair. Sid, Ole, and Windham try their best to hold Flair back as we close out the show!

Until next time, so long for now.
