The New Day show up to kickstart the program tonight. Of course, they go right into their confrontation with the Rock as they play that footage from Raw. It was not very PG if you know what I mean. Rock says PENISES and CANDY ASSES. The Usos come out and superkick Xavier Woods into the Spinebuster and the People’s Elbow. Back to Smackdown, all New Day wanted to do was show the Rock they have what he doesn’t: GOLD. Well, technically your belts are copper. Big E calls the Rock a “doo doo mouth” for using non-PG words on TV and then the Miz interrupts. He felt he was upstaged by the Rock last week on Raw and reminds us again that he main evented a WrestleMania. In mid-sentence, the Usos come out and say WHOA a bunch. Ugh, I liked it better when Samoans just kept their mouths shut and acted like savages. Kofi points out that the Rock isn’t going to come out and save them tonight though. Well, now the Usos bring out two more partners to even the odds: Titus O’Neil & Dolph Ziggler. Big brawl erupts as the babyface boys clean house on the heels.
- The New Day & The Miz vs. The Usos, Dolph Ziggler & Titus O’Neil
Miz gets knocked around by the Usos to start. Tag to Kofi, he gets slapped a bunch by Titus. Ziggler tags in and gets stuck on the wrong side of town. Belly to belly suplex by Big E gets two. Ziggler manages to slide under Big E and make the tag to Jimmy. He goes Samoan Drop and buttalanche crazy on Big E. After he knocks the rest of New Day and Miz off the apron, Big E gives him an overhead belly to belly suplex into the corner to take us into commercial. When we come back, the New Day are taking over with the Unicorn Stampede. Xavier grabs his trombone and plays a little NEW DAY ROCKS while Miz, Big E, and Kofi are dancing. Awesome. Eventually, Jimmy fights back and hot tags Titus. He runs through his usual slams and corner avalanches for a nearfall on Miz. Big E and Kofi are dumped out for the Usos STEREO PLANCHAS. ZIG ZAG to Xavier! Dolph fights off the Skull Crushing Finale and superkicks Miz back into the CLASH OF THE TITUS for the three-count. (8:00 shown) Not very different at all from what we saw last week in a six-man. Anyways, Titus celebrates with the kids in the audience putting over what a humanitarian he is. **
- WWE U.S. Champion Kalisto vs. Neville
Lawler almost gets racist with his comments about Kalisto being a US champ despite not being an American. Neville flips out of everything Kalisto tries to start until he catches him with the handstand headscissors you’ve seen Ricochet do. Out on the floor, Neville blocks a headscissors and tries a running powerbomb into the barricade, but Kalisto gets the headscissors anyways and sends Neville crashing into the barricade. They both make it back in the ring at the nine count. Commercials! When we come back, Kalisto springboards into a sitout powerbomb for 1-2-NO! Over in the corner, Kalisto stuns Neville with a nice super frankensteiner for two. Kalisto goes for the finish, but Neville fights back and connects with an enziguri. He tries the Dead Lift German Suplex a couple times. On the second try, Kalisto counters into the SALIDA DEL SOL for the win. (5:27 shown) Seemed like their styles are too similar or something. I can’t quite put my fingers on what I didn’t like here, but I wasn’t a big fan of this encounter. Lots of action, for sure. Just not a lot of storytelling. **
HIGHLIGHT REEL: Once again, Chris Jericho serves as the hype man for Smackdown pointing out the main event of Fastlane and mentions his match with AJ Styles this past week on Raw. He brings out Dean Ambrose who brings a potted plant with him. Jericho introduces Roman Reigns. Lawler points out that Roman can’t win big matches. He says people down in Texas are calling him “Romo Reigns”. SNAP! Jericho asks if their friendship will become strained heading into Fastlane with so much on the line. They pretty much say no. They joke around about what their strategy for the match may or may not be. When the subject turns to Brock Lesnar, Roman tells Ambrose that Brock is unlike anybody Ambrose has ever faced before. Ambrose reminds Reigns that he doesn’t really have to beat Brock, he can maybe pin Roman instead and go onto WrestleMania. Reigns points out to Dean that he hasn’t beaten him either, so what’s your point? Things are starting to get a little tense when the Wyatt Family show up on the rampway. Bray talks about bringing on the apocalypse again and Roman interrupts to say he doesn’t know what Bray is talking about, so why they don’t come down to the ring for a fight. Bray plans to put the three in the ring down forever tonight. Beware, the apocalypse is upon you. RUN.
- AJ Styles vs. Curtis Axel (w/The Social Outcasts)
When Ranallo mentions AJ’s two-time IWGP heavyweight championship status, Lawler goes on a tirade about nothing matters if it didn’t happen here in the WWE and that AJ needs to prove himself around here. AJ hits the leapfrog dropdown and dropkick on Axel to start. Axel puts the boots to Styles in the corner and throws him into the ropes for a dropkick of his own. He misses an elbow drop though from the second rope and AJ mounts a fiery comeback. Styles wants the Quebrada DDT, but Axel isn’t there to take it. The Social Outcasts get involved, but AJ wipes them out with a somersault plancha. Springboard forearm smash gets blocked as Axel tries the PERFECTPLEX, but AJ slips away and lands the Pele Kick. STYLES CLASH! Cover, 1-2-3. (3:22) Fun little glorified squash. It’ll get better with time. Lawler admits AJ has had a pretty good first week in WWE. Love that they really seem to be putting him over. *½
- Charlotte (w/Ric Flair) vs. Natalya
Non-title match here, obvs. The Queen of Harts is back. Wristlocks and such to start. Natalya snapmares Charlotte down and runs over her to come back around for a basement dropkick. Charlotte retreats to the ropes and cheapshots Nattie with a big boot. Ab stretches are traded. Charlotte lands a dropkick and chops Natalya, but Natalya returns the favor on her. They go to the floor where Ric Flair gets up in Natalya’s face and WOOS at her. Apparently she’s so distracted as she goes back in the ring, that she doesn’t see Charlotte coming at her with a chopblock to set up the FIGURE-EIGHT for the tapout. (3:52) So much for the queen. She keeps the hold locked in until Becky Lynch runs down and chases Charlotte off. *
Some updates on Nikki Bella and her neck surgery are provided.
Elsewhere, R-Truth and Goldust discuss doing some running. Truth is weirded out while Goldust is stretching. Truth thinks there’s some homosexual shenanigans happening here, but there’s not. Goldust is just misunderstood.
- Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose & Chris Jericho vs. The Wyatt Family (w/Braun Strowman)
What team has been involved in more six-man tag main events on Smackdown than the Wyatts over the past several years? Jericho plays face in peril for most of this match as the Wyatt family cut the ring in half on him and just brutalize him. After Roman gets knocked off the apron, Ambrose winds up taking the HOT TAG. He hits the bulldog and the flying elbow smash on Rowan for two. He takes out Bray with a pescado and pulls the top rope down on Rowan to send him out to the floor for a suicide dive. Back in, Rowan catches Ambrose coming off the top with a spinning heel kick. Tag to Bray, Ambrose avoids Sister Abigail and lands the McGuinness Clothesline. HOT TAG TO REIGNS, and the match breaks down. Jericho and Ambrose deliver STEREO PESCADOS on both Bray and Rowan. Meanwhile, Braun Strowman distracts Reigns before the Superman Punch can nail Harper. He hits Harper with the Superman Punch anyways, but Strowman yanks Reigns out to the floor and throws him into the barricade for the DQ. (10:08 shown) After the Wyatt family take out Jericho and Ambrose, Reigns is left all alone for Sister Abigail. It would have happened too if it hadn’t been for the Big Show coming down. He slams Rowan and decks Harper. He goes nose to nose with Strowman until Harper and Rowan attack him from behind. With Bray directing the whole beatdown, Big Show is laid out. Here comes the Superman Punch, but Strowman grabs Reigns by the throat in mid-move! Big Show GOOZLES Strowman and dumps him on the floor. Bray looks to deliver Sister Abigail to Reigns after all, but that’s countered and he gets wiped out with the Superman Punch! Jericho and Ambrose dump out Rowan while Harper gets thrown by Big Show into the SPEAR from Reigns. Well, I believe the good guys have cleaned house. **½
BROCK LESNAR RETURNS ON MONDAY NIGHT RAW. Believe dat.
Until next time, so long for now.
