In case you missed it last week, here are some highlights:
NOW ONTO THIS WEEK:
The Mack approaches Sexy Star backstage and asks her to be in his corner tonight when he faces Marty the Moth, but she declines because she’s afraid of what might happen to her. Mack then encourages her to come out with him and squash that bug. Okay then. It’s on.
Your hosts are Matt Striker and Vampiro.
- The Mack (w/Sexy Star) vs. Marty the Moth
Mack is a HOUSE OF FIRE to start. Sexy enjoys vicariously getting some revenge on Marty here. In a funny moment of irony, Marty NO-SELLS some turnbuckle smashes because twenty years ago it would be the Mack who would be no-selling. However, Marty does sell a (arm?) lariat and a leg lariat. Mack gets sent to the floor though as Marty shows off with a plancha. Back inside, Marty takes too long on the top rope and misses a dive. NOW HERE COMES THE MACK. He is throwing suplexes everywhere. When he goes to the top, the lights go out. Some creepy music plays as a strange creature comes out to ringside. Sexy Star seems very concerned like she knows who this is. When the lights come back on, we see a woman dressed like a moth with an Aztec style. Sexy Star is now facing her attacker. Meanwhile, Mack is still up on the top rope totally confused and gets slammed by Marty. Flying Curb Stomp by Marty gets the three-count. (3:30) Ah man, poor Mack. Marty introduces us to his sister who will be going by the name Mariposa, which is the Spanish word for butterfly. Under the hood, she is best known on the indy circuit as Cheerleader Melissa. She spent some time in TNA as Raisha Saeed, but I don’t feel like that’s her best period as a performer. Anywho, Sexy Star is SUPER concerned and gets kicked in the head by Mariposa. *½
We get a video package on Fenix.
Elsewhere, Drago confronts Jack Evans about calling himself the Dragon Slayer. Evans puts the blame for that name on the people. Next thing we know, PJ Black is behind Drago swinging some nun-chucks. And then all three of them have nun-chucks. Drago is clearly outnumbered and goes down to PJ Black and Jack Evans, but then the lights go out and Aerostar appears to scare the bad guys away! Good to see him back. He helps Drago to his feet and it appears an alliance has been formed.
- No DQ Match: Cage vs. Johnny Mundo
No Johnny Mundo. Instead, Taya Valkyrie appears and says since Mundo has already beaten Cage, she thinks it’s now her turn. Her name is Taya and she is the perfect woman. She knows Cage isn’t really a man (he’s a MACHINE!), but wants to see if Cage has the balls to face her.
- No DQ Match: Cage vs. Taya Valkyrie
Striker tells us that Taya has been trained by Lance Storm, so she knows what she’s doing in the ring. This isn’t like some cute Sexy Star match. Taya literally has no chance of harming Cage for any lengthy period of time. She kicks out at two after a Samoan Neckbreaker off the shoulders. Taya low blows Cage and kicks him in the face a few times. There’s some obvious editing here as it appears that Cage just walks straight into a tornado DDT like that would happen. She delivers double knees to the face down in the corner, but Cage easily kicks out at two. Taya goes out and grabs her lead pipe, but Cage turns things around and powerbombs her onto the barricade and then powerbombs her onto the ringpost. Back inside, two more powerbombs. Cage sets up two tables outside the ring and gives Taya a SUPERPLEX THROUGH THE TABLES. She’s done, right? When he brings Taya back in the ring, Johnny Mundo appears and hits Cage over the head with the pipe. Mundo drags Taya on top of Cage and dogpile isn’t enough to pin Cage. Mundo finds some glass bottles and a cinder block. Cage counters a powerbomb with an Alabama Slam and goes to curb stomp Mundo on the cinder block, but Taya jumps on Cage’s back for the save. Mundo breaks TWO GLASS BOTTLES over his face, but CAGE NO-SELLS. OH MAN. As Cage stalks Mundo, Taya gets shoved in his way instead as Cage delivers WEAPON X on her for the win. (7:00) This was super entertaining and the type of thing Lucha Underground excels at over the other companies on TV. Not a wrestling masterpiece, but so much fun. Holy crap. Kudos to Taya for all those bumps as it didn’t appear that Cage gave her no quarter. And yeah, Mundo is a horrible person. ***
Famous B still wants to make you famous. Why is he wearing a wizard’s hat? Because he can turn Brenda into a nothing happening lady into a total L.A. chick. 423-GET-FAME, ya’ll. Famous B might be the new New Day.
Ivelisse comes out of Catrina’s office with a LU trios titles match next week. When she tells Son of Havoc and Angelico the good news, the bad news is that they must win or leave Lucha Underground. We know how that stipulation worked out for Drago.
- Lucha Underground Title Match: Mil Muertes (c) (w/Catrina) vs. Prince Puma vs. Pentagon Jr.
This is Mil Muertes’ first match since Pentagon Jr. snapped his arm on the season two premiere back on January 27. Puma is looking for redemption after losing the LU title to Mil Muertes in the first place. Pentagon Jr. and Puma want to fight because they just plain don’t like each other. Lucha Underground knows how to build these triple threat matches. Puma and Pentagon jump Muertes to start. It’s only temporary though as Mil drills them both with a double clothesline. He powerbombs Puma and gives Pentagon a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Muertes gives Pentagon a bunch of short-arm clotheslines in the corner and then grabs Puma and continues the clotheslines. He throws Puma into the opposite corner and heaves Pentagon out to the floor. Puma finds Pentagon and drops him with a tope into a tornado DDT. Muertes stops a springboard attack from Puma and connects with a pescado! Puma fights back on Muertes through the crowd and then walks down the banister to catch Pentagon with a headscissors! Muertes catches Puma with a straight right and tries to throw Puma back in the ring, but Puma kicks off the apron and does a flip back on the floor. Here comes Pentagon to nail Muertes with a superkick. Pentagon gives Puma a back suplex on the apron. Mil then runs Pentagon into the post and we’re finally back inside the ring. Powerbomb and a DDT follows on Pentagon, but he comes back with a couple Sling Blades. Back on the floor, we witness quite the series of dives from Pentagon and Puma on Muertes. They wind up in the crowd, but Pentagon leaves Puma behind with a slam on the steps. Pentagon dives again on Muertes, but Mil is just pissed right now. He backs Pentagon into the apron and throws him into a section of wooden chairs. Puma reappears with a shooting star plancha on both guys. Back in the ring, Puma lands the BENADRYLLER. 630 SENTON! Cover, 1-2-NO! Mil makes the last second save. Now Pentagon and Puma get together for a SUPERKICK PARTY on Muertes. The party soon ends as Pentagon catches Puma with a backcracker out of the corner. PENTAGON DRIVER! Cover, 1-2-NO! Now the FEAR FACTOR. Will he sacrifice Puma? No! Muertes jumps up and SPEARS Pentagon away. SPEAR to Puma! He then picks up both challengers and drops them with the DOUBLE FLATLINER. He covers them both and gets the three-count – clearly defeating both men. (12:00) Just as Mil Muertes reemerges as the most powerful force in Lucha Underground, his arch-rival Fenix appears and cashes in the Gift of the Gods championship challenging Mil to a LU title match next week. Now just drop the mic and walk away. This just might be the Joe-Styles-Daniels of triple threat matches in Lucha Underground. ****½
These next two weeks will cement the trifecta of awesome that is Lucha Underground.
