Lucha Underground on El Rey Network (03.16.16)
March 16, 2016
Los Angeles, CA
The current Lucha Underground champs are as follows:
Lucha Underground Champion: Mil Muertes (8/5/15)
Lucha Underground Gift of the Gods Champion: Fenix (3/2/16)
Lucha Underground Trios Champions: The Disciples of Death (7/29/15)
In case you missed it last week, here are some highlights:
NOW ONTO THIS WEEK:
We start tonight’s huge show with an interesting scene between Fenix and Catrina. She has tried everything to destroy him, but Fenix just keeps rising from the ashes. Catrina desires his powers because they can give her life again. She sometimes wonders if she made the wrong choice and should have remained loyal to Fenix. They could have ruled the Temple together. She and Fenix share a long passionate final kiss. Tonight, Mil Muertes will destroy the Fenix once and for all. Fenix will bring her back from the dead. And just like that, she disappears. I’m impressed with Catrina showing some acting chops here.
Your hosts are Matt Striker and Vampiro.
- Lucha Underground Trios Championship: The Disciples of Death (c) (w/Catrina) vs. Angelico, Son of Havoc & Ivelisse
If the Unlikely Trio don’t regain the titles tonight, they will leave Lucha Underground forever. Striker points out that the Disciples of Death were the ones to dethrone Angelico, Son of Havoc, and Ivelisse from the trios titles in the first place, so hopefully their redemption draweth nigh here tonight. Big brawl to start as the Unlikely Trio corner these guys and take turns splashing them. They work so strong and fast against the Disciples of Death in the first minute that Havoc goes up for the Shooting Star Press only to be pushed off to the floor. They draw Ivelisse into a springboard dropkick to turn the tide and make her our heroine in peril. One of the DOD guys holds her down in a stump puller hold harkening back to last season when she had a leg injury. She escapes a front headlock and falls back into a hot tag to Havoc. He hits a flatliner/DDT combo on two DOD members. There’s a blind tag to Angelico who connects with a knee strike from the apron into the ring. Once the DOD boys are on the floor, we get an AIR SHOW from the Unlikely Trio. Back inside, Catrina pulls Havoc down when he tries a springboard causing him to smash his face on the apron. While Angelico watches Ivelisse deliver a headscissors Lita-style from the apron to the floor, the other two DOD guys in the ring do the Killer Bees switch. Inside cradle on Angelico, 1-2-NO! Knee strike, running buckle bomb, SHOOTING STAR PRESS by Havoc, cover by Angelico gets the three-count to win the titles. (4:56) Ladies and gentlemen, we have new Lucha Underground trios champions. Felt like a glorified squash match to me. Fun, but not the ten-minute match that could have been used as a main event for some of these weaker shows in February. **
In the workout room, Johnny Mundo talks some junk to Prince Puma about winning Aztec Warfare and taking the Lucha Underground title. This isn’t Puma’s world, it’s Mundo’s world. I know – I get why that statement makes no sense.
Elsewhere, Dragon Azteca Jr. goes to see Rey Mysterio Jr. His training is complete and they are about to drink something, but first Rey must give him a letter sealed with an Aztec symbol. It’s an invitation to compete in Aztec Warfare. Rey says this is his opportunity to prove that Dragon Azteca belongs in the Temple. Mysterio has an invitation to Aztec Warfare next week as well. SNAP.
- Bull Rope Match: Texano vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr. (w/the Crew)
The Crew come out with Chavo, but decide not to stay. Lot of play with the bull rope to start. Our first “wrestling move” comes in about four minutes into the match when Texano breaks up Chavo’s choke with an electric chair drop. Texano tries to give Chavo some rope burn on the balls. Striker calls it the San Pedro pony ride. Chavo stops a superplex, but gets pulled down anyways. The Texano Bomb gets the win. (6:03) He’s still pissed after the bell and whips on Chavo some more. **
In the back, Mil Muertes beats the crap out of the Disciples of Death. He doesn’t like failures. He may have killed them? Catrina comes by and they head to the ring.
375 miles from Boyle Heights, Dario Cueto feeds his brother some more humans trying to get to the Lucha Underground show, I suppose. Black Lotus is still there with him. They are ready to take his brother to the Temple. Cueto unlocks the door with the key from around his neck to reveal a giant man with a fashion sense clearly inspired by the one and only Michael Myers. He’s covered in blood looking pretty scary – and now he’s LOOSE.
- Lucha Underground Championship: Mil Muertes (c) (w/Catrina) vs. Fenix
Muertes hammers down Fenix to start. Fenix fires back with a springboard dropkick, but then tries his handspring off the ropes and gets a knee to the gut. Fenix comes back with some strikes and handsprings off the ropes to hit Muertes with the cutter. Fenix winds up on the apron though and gets speared to the floor. Holy crap. Back inside, Fenix tries a double jump move only to fly down into a cutter. SNAP. Cover, 1-2-NO! With Fenix down, Mil rips open the mask insulting everything Fenix. Muertes tries to suplex Fenix to the floor. When he can’t pull it off, Fenix blocks a turnbuckle smash and enziguri kicks Muertes to the floor. He pulls out a chair and stops a tope suicida. Ouch. That busts open Fenix. Mil punches and bites the cut – getting OLD SCHOOL here. Vamp is loving it. There’s a DDT and we’re back on the floor. Mil takes Fenix over the balcony as they go back and forth. Fenix tries walking down the rail only to be shoved back into the fans. AWESOME. Back on the floor, Fenix walks down the rail anyways and planchas onto Muertes. Beautiful. That took more out of Fenix than Mil as Mil powerbombs Fenix onto the announce table that doesn’t break. Before they go back in the ring, Catrina and Muertes share a bloody kiss. Fenix charges Mil on the apron with a bunch of kicks. With Muertes doubled over on the apron, he follows up with a flying double stomp. He lays on top of Mil and rips his mask open. NEVER EVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. That just pisses off Muertes as he charges Fenix with a spear. He mounts Fenix and punches the crap out of him some more. The chair gets brought back into the mix as Fenix uses that to his advantage with a couple chairshots to the head. MUERTES IS DOWN. Now even Mil is bleeding. Once he’s up, Fenix is on him with some more strikes. Double-jump 450 splash gets 1-2-NO! He hurt his right hip on that one. Fenix sucks it up, but runs right into a nasty Uranage slam for 1-2-NO! Now the crowd thinks this is awesome. More kicks to Mil staggers him. Fenix wants a bridging German suplex and ends up delivering an Everest Suplex for 1-2-NO! He heads up top, but his hip is bothering him. Muertes stops him and brings him down with a SUPER DDT! He picks up Fenix by the throat for the FLATLINER, but Fenix counters with some crazy prawn hold for the three-count and the title. (13:40) There was blood, violence, and excellent storytelling that leaves everything up in the air for the future. What does this loss mean for Mil Muertes and Catrina? This was just another incredible chapter in the premiere feud of Lucha Underground. Just fantastic stuff all-around. ****½
Catrina tells Fenix to celebrate while he can because next week at Aztec Warfare the Lucha Underground championship will be on the line. Before it was just a number one contender’s match, but now it’s for the title. Catrina says Fenix will be #1 and Mil Muertes will enter at #20. Death is coming for everyone – 1000 of them.
The apocalypse is upon us. May God have mercy on our souls.
