THE MATCHES
- Razor Ramon vs. The Kid (RAW 5/17/93)
As Razor’s music hits, Vince gets in the line: “Anything can happen on Monday Night Raw.” He’s gone from the Kamikaze Kid to the Cannonball Kid. Now, he’s just The Kid. After being squashed on Raw the last two weeks by Doink the Clown and Mr. Hughes in two minutes each, the Kid now finds himself against Razor Ramon. He’s still Da Bad Guy here. I’m not being a funny mark here, I really mean that he’s still at this point a heel. Ramon throws Kid around to start. He works the ab stretch and catches Kid with the Fallaway Slam. Razor misses a corner charge, allowing Kid to break free and land a Moonsault Press for 1! 2! 3! (2:12) And the 1-2-3 Kid was born. In the following weeks, Ramon would offer more and more money to the Kid to get a rematch. As it turned out, Razor wouldn’t get his win back until 1996! ½*
- Razor Ramon vs. The 1-2-3 Kid (RAW 6/21/93)
Razor brings the $10,000 with him in a sack that’s labeled “$10,000″. The 1-2-3 Kid still has his L. Kid tights on. He’s super reluctant to get into the ring with Razor, but that’s understandable. He waits for Razor to make a mistake by swinging at him while he’s on the apron. Two different hope spots pop the crowd HUGE thinking Kid was going to upset Ramon again. He leaps into the Fallaway Slam though and it’s business as usual for Ramon. He doesn’t just want to beat the Kid though. Oh, no. When it’s time for the Razor’s Edge, he tosses Kid out to the floor and lifts up the ringside mat. He wants to drop him on the concrete, but Kid backdrops out. He heads up top, but slips and splats his face on the cement. Just nasty. Back inside, Kid avoids a corner charge and hits Ramon with the Moonsault Press just like before for 1-2-NO! When that doesn’t win, Kid lunges for the sack of money and heads for the exit. Of course, Razor goes after him as they both get counted out. (5:15) As they head backstage, Kid runs straight out the door and hops in a car waiting for him as they drive away, leaving Razor with minimal revenge and zero dollars. But who was driving the car?! For what it hoped to accomplish, this was VERY well done. **
- Razor Ramon vs. Diesel (RAW 11/29/93)
Diesel overpowers to start. He buries the knees in the corner and lands the Bossman straddle. Elbow drop to the back and the Side Slam gets two. Razor punches out of a bearhug, but runs into a boot. Snake Eyes scores another nearfall. Back to the bearhug because what other offensive move does Diesel have to show us. Once again, Ramon escapes and hits a flying bulldog for two. He slams the big guy and calls for the RAZOR’S EDGE. As he sets him up, Shawn runs in for the DQ. (5:18) Well, Diesel would certainly improve. What more can you say here? Shawn delivers a Superkick and threatens to give Razor a piledriver on the IC belt, but the 1-2-3 Kid FLIES onto HBK to put a stop to it. He kicks Shawn out of the ring as Ramon and the Kid stand tall. ¾*
- Shawn Michaels vs. The 1-2-3 Kid (RAW 12/6/93)
Shawn wears a fake IC belt out to the ring. As far as Bobby Heenan and Shawn are concerned, HBK’s still the IC champ anyways. Loads of reversals and counters to start until Kid finally just kicks Shawn out to the floor. Springboard dive wipes out Shawn some more. Back in, Shawn flips out of a suplex, but still takes a German suplex for two. Kid stays adamant with a headlock for a while. He walks up the ropes with it one time too many as Shawn breaks the hold with a back suplex. Shawn headscissors Kid out of the corner down to the floor, but winds up being whipped into the ringpost. Kid wants to CANNONBALLLL off the apron, but Shawn catches him for a powerslam! That’s not good for your back. After a commercial break, HBK starts delivering backbreakers in the ring. Kid fights off a superplex, but takes a dropkick in the gut on the way down. Cover, 1-2-NO! Extended backbreaker over HBK’s knee, but Kid kicks out of that. Shawn misses a clothesline and eats a spinning heel kick as both men are down. They fight right back up into a double-KO! Back up again, Kid unleashes his kick combo in the corner and delivers a Moonsault Press for 1-2-NO! CANNONBALL SPLASH FROM THE TOP, but Shawn rolls out of the way. Fool him once, shame on me. Fool him twice, shame on you. After a second commercial break, we see Shawn hitting the Kid with a Superkick! From there, Shawn proceeds to mimic Razor Ramon and gives the Kid the RAZOR’S EDGE for 1-2-NO! He pulls Kid up off the mat. He gives Kid a second RAZOR’S EDGE and when he goes for a third one, Razor Ramon appears and pulls Kid by his ankles out of the ring. Shawn comes out and gets a good slap on Razor. Not cool, chico. He gives chase as they head over by the entry way. I’m pretty sure HBK has been counted out or something. (10:30 shown) Shawn fake trips and as Ramon backs him toward the curtain, Diesel sneaks a punch in from behind the curtain and decks Ramon! That stops Razor long enough for Shawn to tear his shirt off and choke him out so he can give Ramon the RAZOR’S EDGE not once, but TWICE on the concrete floor. This was good action as you might expect, but I liked it better in 1996 when the roles were reversed. ***
- WWF Tag Team Championship: The Quebecers (c) (w/Johnny Polo) vs. The 1-2-3 Kid & Razor Ramon (RAW 2/21/94)
Originally scheduled to be Razor and Marty challenging the Quebecers, but Jannetty gets fired during a recent European tour and the Kid takes his place. Even though he was such a great talent, poor Marty just never did get it right. Jannetty and the Kid had already ruined the Quebecers first WWF tag team titles reign on RAW’s first anniversary show. While the Quebecers regained the titles a week later in MSG, will the 1-2-3 Kid and the IC champ Razor Ramon be able to upset another title reign? Well, the answer is no. Let’s see what happens anyway though. Pierre kicks Razor out to the floor when he’s not looking so the Quebecers can double-team the Kid. He manages to fight them both off until Ramon can get back into the ring. Out goes Jacques and Kid takes a Fallaway Slam into Pierre for a nearfall! SUH-NAP! While the Quebecers regroup, the crowd starts chanting “1-2-3″ like it’s the cool thing to do. Back in, the Quebecers hug it out in a non-sexual way. Kid grabs Pierre and wrestles him down with some chain wrestling moves. That’s interesting. Tag to Razor, Johnny Polo quickly trips him up from the floor. Oops. While Kid argues with ref Bill Alfonso, the Quebecers put the boots to him. The double-team fails though as Razor hits them both with a double clothesline. With the Quebecers down, Razor and Kid gang up on poor Johnny Polo as Ramon gives him the RAZOR’S EDGE ON THE FLOOR! Vince declares this match a real donnybrook. A pile of refs come out to haul Johnny Polo away. They are doing just an awful job of stabilizing his spine off the floor. Yeah, let’s take a commercial break. When we come back, Razor and Pierre are back to step one: the lock up. Ramon winds up the arm for a couple shoulder blocks and tags the Kid to fly down onto the arm. I’m impressed with the Kid here doing all these arm takedowns that you wouldn’t normally see out of him. You know, actual wrestling. Wait a minute, did Vince just make an announcement concerning NASCAR and compare that to WWE? Boy that Vince sure is a country bumpkin at heart, isn’t he? Finally, Pierre gets away from the armbar and leapfrogs his balls right down into a fist. Holy crap, Kid and Razor just pulled off a Rock N Roll Express move where they both yank on a guy’s hamstrings and then roll across the ring to knock the tag partner down from the apron. Amazing. Spinning heel kick by the Kid gets two. They continue to work over Pierre’s leg until he kicks Razor off into the corner and makes a desperate tag to Jacques. Razor catches him coming in with a drop toehold and tags the Kid as he flies onto Jacques’ leg. You know where this is going. Fast forward as Diesel is shown standing in the aisle watching over Razor and to generally look menacing while feeling on his fingerless glove. Pierre runs in and nails Razor to turn the tide over to the Quebecers. They proceed to cheat as they keep him on their side of town. Heel miscommunication ensues and the 1-2-3 Kid gets the HOT TAG! Seems backwards, but whatever. He unloads with kicks, but whiffs on a dropkick. They give him a HUGE launching hotshot and then Jacques slams big Pierre onto the Kid for 1-2-NO! We see more of the great double-teams you expect from the Quebecers here. Jacques goes to backdrop Pierre and squash the Kid, but he rolls out of the way and HOT TAGS Razor! BAAAACK BODY DROPS everywhere! Throw in a double noggin knocker too! Pierre takes the Back Superplex and that’s followed up with the RAZOR’S EDGE! Diesel starts to get closer to the ring as Razor covers Pierre. Wait a minute! Shawn Michaels literally comes out of nowhere and jumps on the pin for the DQ. (16:10 shown) Shawn stomps the crap out of Razor’s head for a while until the Kid ignores Diesel for a moment and runs Shawn out of the ring. As for the match, a great formula tag and much better than I remembered. Of course with the Steiners and Marty Jannetty now gone and only freak babyface contenders like Men on a Mission and eventually the Headshrinkers, the Quebecers were hard pressed to have good matches with anybody but people who were involved in other angles. ***½
- Ladder Match for the WWF Intercontinental Championship: Razor Ramon (c) vs. Shawn Michaels (w/Diesel) (WrestleMania X 3/20/94)
It’s the battle to determine the undisputed WWF Intercontinental champion. HBK felt he was wrongfully stripped of the IC belt back in September and has since carried a replica belt around and claimed himself to be the real champion, regardless of the fact Razor Ramon was the actual champion. To win the match, one of the two has to grab both belts. Other than the backstory, I don’t think this needs any sort of hyperbole. Every wrestling fan is pretty familiar with this match, I suppose. They do a little bit of wrestling to start. HBK flips out of a hiptoss into a chokeslam. Shawn comes back with a swinging neckbreaker and tosses Razor out to the floor for a clothesline by Diesel. The ref suspects Diesel did something to Razor, which he did, so ref Earl Hebner sends Diesel to the back. Razor takes HBK to the floor and folds the ringside mats over to expose the concrete. Back in they go, Razor looks to give HBK the RAZOR’S EDGE from inside the ring on the concrete down below! HBK backdrops Razor over out to the concrete instead. It’s ladder time! Michaels brings the ladder towards the ring. Razor nails Shawn and grabs the ladder, so HBK baseball slides the ladder into Ramon! Shawn takes the ladder into the ring and jabs it right in Ramon’s gut a couple times. HBK follows up by slamming the ladder down across Razor’s back. Now Michaels makes the first climb. Razor grabs HBK by his tights – exposing a pair of cheeks. Shawn kicks him back and drops an elbow off the ladder! Shawn sets the ladder up in the corner and splashes Razor in a great highlight reel moment. Shawn makes another climb, but Razor turns the ladder over and causes Shawn to hotshot himself on the top rope. With both men up, they collide. Shawn folds the ladder up in the corner. Razor reverses a whip into the ladder and Shawn goes crashing out on the floor! SICK! Razor takes the ladder out to the floor with him and sandwiches Shawn in between the ladder and the ringpost. Razor tilts the ladder up against the apron and catapults Shawn into the ladder. Back in, Razor knocks Shawn over the top rope with the ladder and starts his first ladder climb. Shawn climbs up on the apron and comes off the top with a double-ax handle to save the match for himself. Now they both climb the ladder from each side. They slug each other until Razor slams HBK from the ladder to the mat below! Uh oh, the ladder turns over and takes Razor with it. Razor climbs again and touches the belts, but HBK dropkicks him off. Shawn hits the Superkick and a Piledriver. Shawn folds up the ladder and splashes the ladder across Razor’s body! Ramon is DONE! Shawn sets up the ladder over Razor’s body and starts to climb. Shawn touches the belts, but Razor gets up and shoulderblocks the ladder over. Shawn falls on the ropes and gets his foot tied up! That makes it easy for Razor to climb up and grab the belts. (18:45) This may not be the original ladder match, but it’s definitely the oldest one that everyone looks to when they think of great ladder matches. The bumps taken by Shawn Michaels in this match were unparalleled by anything ever seen before in the US– making this completely innovative. It may seem mild in comparison to what we’ve seen since then with more flashy moves while this match holds more substance and psychology. It’s a true classic and it always will be. *****
- WWF Intercontinental Championship: Razor Ramon (c) vs. Diesel (w/Shawn Michaels) (Superstars 4/30/94)
Razor comes out thinking he’s going to BUM RUSH THE SHOW punching away on Diesel, but the big man won’t come off his feet. He tries the RAZOR’S EDGE and Diesel backdrops him away. Razor ducks a big boot though and clotheslines Diesel down. He keeps pounding on Diesel and the discus punch sends him through the ropes to the floor. On the apron, Diesel snaps Razor’s neck on the top rope. Back in, he hits a short-arm clothesline. Over to the corner, Diesel shows off his elbow smashing abilities. From corner to corner, Diesel delivers the Side Slam for 1-2-NO! He hits the Snake Eyes and follows up with the Bossman straddle. Commercials! When we return, Diesel drills Razor with a running elbow drop to the back. He then twists on Razor’s neck, but Ramon escapes with an electric chair drop. What a maneuver! Slow crawling cover by Ramon gets two. Razor continues his comeback with a flying bulldog for two. He slams the big man and only gets two. Shawn Michaels hops up on the apron and gets punched down. Diesel then baits Razor into the corner and catches him with a knee. While he’s concentrating on Razor, Shawn is trying to untie the turnbuckle pad in the opposite corner. When Diesel goes to whip Ramon, Razor reverses the whip and Diesel goes crashing into Shawn; thus cushioning the blow. With the corner now exposed, Diesel reverses a whip and sends Razor into the steel! JACKKNIFE! Diesel covers him for the win. (5:47 shown) Ladies and gents, we have a *new* WWF Intercontinental champion. Diesel’s best match to date if you ask me. **
- WWF Tag Team Championship: Shawn Michaels & Diesel (c) vs. The 1-2-3 Kid & Razor Ramon (Action Zone 10/30/94)
Best known as the Kliq match. Razor and Kid quickly take care of Diesel, leaving Shawn alone with them for the RAZOR’S EDGE. As Razor covers, Diesel yanks Shawn out to prevent the pin. Back inside, Kid is throwing everything at Shawn to get the quick pin, but can’t quite pull it off. Shawn blocks a headscissors with a powerbomb and tags in Diesel. He tosses Kid around for a bit. Tag to Razor, he punches out both Diesel and Shawn. It’s not too long before he’s stuck in the wrong side of town though. Commercials! When we return, Diesel gets a blind tag and runs down Razor. After some knees in the corner from Big D, Shawn catches Razor with a clothesline from the apron. Razor is *your* face in peril. Side Slam by Diesel gets two. Shawn hits a flying elbow and tries to wear down Razor some more with a chinlock. Razor elbows out and delivers a backslide, but only gets two. Shawn catches him with a dropkick and tags in Diesel, who delivers Snake Eyes. Bossman straddle by Diesel sets up some elbow drops to the back for a two-count. The champs continue to wear down Razor with rest holds. They cheat like crazy during an abdominal stretch. Just great stuff here. More commercials! Time for the comeback. Razor drills Shawn with the Chokeslam to set up the false tag to the Kid. While the ref is with the Kid, Diesel holds Razor for SWEET CHIN MUSIC. Oh, but Razor ducks and Diesel gets KO’ed. HOT TAG TO THE KID! There’s kicks everywhere. Shawn takes the Harley Race bump to the floor. Kid makes him pay with a somersault pescado. Back inside, Kid hits Shawn with a missile dropkick for 1-2-NO! Back to Razor, he delivers the Fallaway Slam. He even throws Kid onto Shawn for a nearfall. Razor wants the Back Superplex, but Shawn reverses and lands on top of Razor! Wait, Razor rolls through and gets the 1-2-NO! Rocket Launcher onto Shawn! Kid covers for 1-2-NO! Some fast counting by Chioda here. Diesel is still knocked out by that kick. Razor stomps Diesel in the face, causing him to fall out to the floor. Meanwhile, Shawn grabs Razor for a sleeper. He works Razor down to the mat to the point the ref starts raising Razor’s arm. After the arm drops twice, Kid punches Shawn off the hold. Razor catapults Shawn into the corner and tags Kid, who delivers a Flying Legdrop for 1-2-NO! Hey look, Diesel is back up. As Shawn reverses a whip into the ropes, the Kid runs straight into Diesel’s big boot. That’ll do it as Shawn covers Kid for the 1-2-3. (17:55 shown) This is how you tear the house down. Just an incredible story told that never had a dull moment and great offense all the way to the end, which made for one of the finest tag matches in WWF history. The finish might seem out of nowhere, but Kid sold the heck out of that boot. ****½
- Diesel, Shawn Michaels, Owen Hart, Jim Neidhart & Jeff Jarrett vs. Razor Ramon, 1-2-3 Kid, Davey Boy Smith, Fatu & Sionne (w/Capt. Lou Albano & Afa) – 5-on-5 Elimination Match ( Survivor Series 11/23/94)
You can’t help but get the feeling that you have the Kliq standing out and then there’s everybody else in the match. Diesel and Shawn stay out of the match for a good long while as Owen, Neidhart and Jarrett all get their butts kicked by the babyfaces. Lots of good fast paced action with everybody hitting their usual spots. Fatu has a little trouble getting used to wearing boots, which was a cool ‘little thing’ that’s missed in today’s wrestling. Diesel finally tags in when the time is right for him and JACKKNIFES Fatu for the first elimination at 13:32. In comes the 1-2-3 Kid, and out he goes thanks to a JACKKNIFE at 14:14. Sionne is our third recipient for the JACKKNIFE to rid us of the New Headshrinkers completely at 14:47. What Owen, Neidhart and Jarrett couldn’t do in the first ten minutes, Diesel accomplished in 75 seconds with three moves. That guy is getting PUSHED. Davey Boy Smith gets booted out to the floor by Diesel and attacked by the other three members of Diesel’s team to get him counted out at 15:10. That leaves Razor Ramon against five guys. Razor fights back hard against Diesel and catches him with the Flying Bulldog off the middle rope. That gets two. Diesel takes over with a short-arm clothesline as Shawn encourages him to put Razor away. Diesel hits Snake Eyes once, but Razor shoves him off into the corner the second time and gives Diesel a big ol’ slam. Diesel avoids the RAZORS EDGE with a backdrop and JACKKNIFES Razor. Now Shawn wants the tag. He convinces Diesel to hold up Razor for SWEET CHIN MUSIC, but Razor ducks and Diesel gets creamed from Shawn for the third time. Diesel has finally had enough of that and boy is he livid. He tosses away his teammates and slowly chases Shawn to the back and all five men are counted out – giving Razor Ramon the win. (21:42) Survivor: Razor Ramon. Three days later, Diesel would capture the WWF title to start on the road to WrestleMania 11. Good match and had it not contained the Diesel/HBK angle and finished up with one member of either team getting the pinfall, it could have been a MOTYC and stole the show. This was similar to the opener at Survivor Series ’91 in that regard. ***½
- Razor Ramon vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley (RAW 1/22/96)
Stills are shown of the Ramon-Goldust match from the Royal Rumble where 1-2-3 Kid flew in with a spinning heel kick to cost Razor the IC title. The yet-to-be-pinned Helmsley comes out with Playboy centerfold Shae Marks. Just because he’s a classy blue blood doesn’t mean he doesn’t like chicks with big cans. You know what I’m talking about, fellas! OHH YEAH! Anyways, the answer is of course she did. The question is did she get ogled by Al Bundy in a special guest appearance on Married with Children. Ted DiBiase and the 1-2-3 Kid appear on the split-screen to tell us that Razor Ramon is a crybaby, yet they’re the ones holding a huge baby bottle and a big diaper. So who’s the baby now? So much of the Clique going on in this match. After the Rumble, Razor has plenty of homophobic rage to dish out on HHH to start. Hunter ducks a charge and pulls the top rope down to send Ramon out to turn the tide as we go to commercial. When we return, Hunter is seen delivering a baseball slide to Ramon. Helmsley wins a suplex battle on the apron and drops Razor’s scrotum on the top rope. Hunter’s idea of working Razor over is whipping him from corner to corner and throwing in a few well-placed punches every now and then. With Ramon laying on the apron, the 1-2-3 Kid comes down and puts that bottle in his mouth. Apparently Kid’s got something disgusting on the nipple because RAZOR SELLS THE BOTTLE! That wakes up Razor as he punches Helmsley down and chases after the Kid to give Hunter the countout victory. (5:59 shown) Even more frustrated now that he’s lost *again*, he tries to give Helmsley the RAZOR’S EDGE. However, he can’t pull that off as Hunter escapes and bails with his gal pal. Razor is just having the worst month ever. *
- Razor Ramon vs. The 1-2-3 Kid (w/Ted DiBiase) – Crybaby Match (In Your House 2/18/96)
I know it sounds ridiculous, but The Kid cost Razor the IC belt at the Royal Rumble and you can figure out how it goes from there. Kid brings a stroller with a Razor Ramon bear sitting in it just to be a little pube. Haha, Kid tries to tear its head off, but he can’t do it! Funny stuff. Instead, he just throws it in Razor’s face. Razor retaliates with a toothpick in Kid’s face. Ouch, that could have severely punctured him! Alright, here we go. Razor punches Kid out to the floor, but then gets his neck snapped on the top rope to set up a springboard clothesline. AIR KID! That gets only a one count. Kid unleashes his kick combo in the corner and then takes Razor down with a spinning heel kick as Razor off the ropes. Razor comes back and tosses Kid out of the corner and whips him back into the corner for a clothesline. Fallaway Slam connects. RAZORS EDGE already? Nope, Kid knows what is coming and rolls to the apron. Razor gives Kid an extra punch to send him to the floor. Meanwhile, DiBiase has some baby powder and throws it in Razor’s eyes RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE REF! Is there no disqualification here? Possibly a jab at the Hogan/Anderson Nitro match for doing the same thing? Who knows. Kid delivers a missile dropkick for two. He follows up with some sliding legdrops and a flying splash for 1-2-NO! Kid jumps on Razor’s back and puts him ALMOST out with a sleeper! He really should have used the ropes there for leverage since he’s a dastardly heel and all. Razor finally escapes by dropping Kid crotch-first on the top rope. Both men are down. Kid crawls over for the cover and gets 1-2-NO! Razor starts his comeback, but Kid elbows off a Back Superplex and hits a flying bodypress on Razor just like in ’93! Oh, but this time rolls through for 1-2-NO! From there, Razor proceeds to give Kid a SUPER FALLAWAY SLAM! Razor calls for the RAZORS EDGE, so DiBiase starts to get DEVIOUS~! Kid has the bottle of baby powder and squirts a bunch in his hand while DiBiase distracts ref Tim White. He sneaks up behind Razor, but then gets the powder kicked back in his face. Now that the Kid is blinded, he stumbles right into a RAZORS EDGE! Razor pulls him up off the pinfall and gives him one more RAZORS EDGE for good measure and covers him for the 1-2-3. (12:02) Good opener, but it felt like Kid was the only one working hard here and there’s only so much he can do. Razor would get suspended for weed to forfeit his WrestleMania payday before coming back in April and phoning it in until he left for WCW in May. And just like the gimmick suggests, Razor puts a diaper on Kid and pours baby powder on him too. DiBiase gets the powder in the eye as well. **¾
