  • Steve Keirn vs. Masa Saito

These two know each other very well from their time spent in Florida over the last couple years. Solie considers Keirn as Saito’s biggest challenge to date here in Georgia Championship Wrestling. Keirn outwrestles Saito on the mat to start and ties Saito up six ways from Sunday. The Strict Mat Technician is the Steve Keirn I enjoy most. Sounds like Saito has put up $5,000 for anyone who can beat him. Once Saito grabs a leg to try to control Keirn, he’s drilled with an enziguri back when it didn’t happen all the time. Keirn finds the SLEEPERHOLD, but Saito wisely staggers into the ropes and bails out as soon as Keirn releases the hold. Back in, Keirn is still able to outwrestle Saito on the mat – and Saito is an OLYMPIAN. Time is starting to be a factor though as there is a ten-minute time limit. Keirn starts dropping knees on Saito and gives him a full body slam for two. Big vertical suplex on Saito gets two as well. Keirn whips Saito into the ropes and surprises him with a SLEEPERHOLD, but Saito finds the ropes. Keirn is trying to back suplex him, but Saito still has a strong hold on the ropes. Saito chops Keirn pretty good and takes him to the corner for a turnbuckle smash. There’s a vertical suplex to Keirn, but Keirn won’t stay down. Russian Legsweep to Keirn, but he kicks out at one. Saito is laying in the karate chops, but Keirn fights his way up and elbow drops Saito for two. Saito goes to the eyes and delivers the SAITO SUPLEX for 1-2-NO! Keirn puts his foot on the bottom rope for the break. Now Saito grabs a rear chinlock as time is running out for Keirn. Saito slams Keirn to the mat hitting the back of his head, but Keirn escapes a front headlock and starts dropping knees to the elbow. He tries to get the amateur pin on Saito, but can’t keep the shoulders down. Saito pounds on Keirn and whips him into the ropes, but Keirn blows a swing and comes back around for a Flying Forearm for 1-2-NO! Release German Suplex connects on Saito, but Saito kicks out at two and the time runs out. (10:00) What a great story told there with Saito finally meeting his match. He tries to do a number on Keirn after the bell, but Kevin Sullivan and Mr. Wrestling II make sure that doesn’t happen. ***¼

Gordon Solie is interrupted by “Free Bird” as the Fabulous Freebirds come out to talk wearing their pink and black robes. Hayes tells the people not to write into the show asking questions about them because who they are isn’t none of their business. He continues to rap about what they are going to do to their opponents out there. Gordy stops Hayes from saying “ass” and keeps on rapping. They plan on getting down in the Omni next Friday night October 10.

The current GCW champs are as follows on 10/11/80:
NWA World Heavyweight Champion: Harley Race (9/9/1980)
NWA Georgia Heavyweight Champion: Dennis Condrey (9/8/1980)
NWA Georgia Tag Team Champions: The Fabulous Freebirds (10/10/1980)
NWA Georgia Jr. Heavyweight Champion: Stan Lane (9/3/1980)
NWA National Television Champion: Terry Taylor (8/22/1980)

When we return, Ole Anderson and Terry Funk come to talk to Gordon. Ole thanks Terry for getting rid of Lars Anderson. Terry Taylor shows up in the ring interrupting their good time. Apparently, he wants a piece of Terry Funk. Funk feels this kid can’t compete with Ole and him. Jerry Roberts and Zane Hickey try to keep Taylor back while Funk talks some smack.

  • Ole Anderson & Terry Funk vs. Jerry Roberts & Zane Hickey

Finally, Terry Taylor retreats to the floor so we can have some ‘RASSLIN. I imagine this will last as long as Ole and Terry want it too. Funk throws Roberts to the floor for a hard bump. Back inside, Funk lands a Piledriver on Roberts for two. Over to Ole, he throws Roberts over to Hickey for a tag. They are all slams and elbow drops on Hickey. Taylor eventually drags Hickey out of the ring and gets inside the ring for the DQ in 3:19. Anderson and Funk can handle Roberts and Taylor, but then STAN HANSEN shows up and cleans house on the heels.

Stan Hansen heads over to Solie and says he knows Ole Anderson better than anybody and he’s gonna get ya. Don’t make no difference when or where, this big nasty Texan is going to make him pay and he’s going to be right on top of Ole with the LARIAT. Love it.

  • Mr. Wrestling #2 vs. Masa Saito

Saito is now putting up $5,000 against MR. WRESTLING #2. Not sure if that’s smart or what, but here we are. NO CAN PIN SAITO IN TEN MINUTES. Anytime #2 tries to get a good hold, Saito finds a way to reach the ropes. Wrestling #2 escapes a headlock and hiptosses Saito. He follows up with a slam and leaps on top of him for a two-count. Out goes Saito. Mr. Wrestling #1 Tim Woods is watching on from ringside yelling at Saito to get back in the ring. Back inside, Wrestling #2 brings Saito to the mat with a waistlock takedown and tries to pin the shoulders. Back to their feet, Wrestling #2 applies a chinlock only for Saito once again to reach the ropes. Saito trips up Wrestling #2, but #2 counters and drives a knee into the quadriceps. Wrestling #2 bends the leg at the knee, but Saito gets up to his feet and starts chopping at #2. He lands the SAITO SUPLEX for 1-2-NO! A Wahoo Chop gets two as well. He tries another whip, but Wrestling #2 reverses only to miss a corner charge. The Russian Legsweep from Saito scores another nearfall. #2 punches back and grabs a headlock to the mat. Saito grabs the tights and tries to roll him over for a pinfall. Saito misses a big swing and Wrestling #2 delivers a back suplex for 1-2-NO! Sensing trouble, Saito goes to the eyes and moves something around in his taped foot. It’s the old Iron Sheik trick. Wrestling #2 never sees the kick to the head coming as Saito nails him for the SHOCKING three-count. (7:35) Tim Woods tries to tell the ref what happened, but it’s too late. Saito has already left the building. Some good wrestling and when he knew he couldn’t beat Wrestling #2, he got the foreign object going. Love it. **½

Gordon Solie introduces to us the NEW Georgia tag champions: The Fabulous Freebirds. Hayes refers to the belts they now carry as the “National” tag team titles. That will come later. They will meet Tony Atlas, Kevin Sullivan, and Mike Graham in the Omni on October 24.

On the tail end of the YouTube video, we see some craziness between Billy Robinson and Guy Mitchell from the fall of 1980 over in Memphis. You can check out all that stuff over on my Memphis page.

That’s going to do it for this video. Until next time, so long for now.
