Saturday Night’s Main Event #29 (04.91)

WWF Saturday Night’s Main Event 29
April 27, 1991
Omaha, NE
Civic Auditorium
(Taped on 4/15/1991)

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Hulk Hogan (3/24/1991)
Intercontinental Champion: Mr. Perfect (11/19/1990)
World Tag Team Champions: The Nasty Boys (3/24/1991)

This is the final SNME episode to air on NBC for fifteen years due to declining ratings. The remaining two episodes (2/92 and 11/92) would be picked up by Fox, which seemed to get a lot of NBC’s table scrapings in the early ’90s.

Your hosts are Vince McMahon & Randy Savage, because he’s retired from all that ‘rasslin! Read the rest of this entry

WrestleMania VII

WWF WrestleMania VII: Superstars and Stripes Forever
March 24, 1991
Los Angeles, CA
L.A. Sports Arena

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Sgt. Slaughter (1/19/1991)
Intercontinental Champion: Mr. Perfect (11/19/1990)
World Tag Team Champions: Hart Foundation (8/27/1990)

So much for that 100,000+ sell-out crowd at the LA Memorial Coliseum. Due to low ticket sales and a supposed bomb scare, the WWF had to settle with the MUCH smaller LA Sports Arena that held just over 15,000 people.

Willie Nelson sings the national anthem. Yeah, doesn’t get much more American than a pothead tax evader.

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby Heenan! Read the rest of this entry

The Main Event #5 (02.91)

WWF The Main Event #5
February 1, 1991
Macon, GA

(Taped on 1/28/1991)

World Champion: Sgt. Slaughter (1/19/1991)
Intercontinental Champion: Mr. Perfect (11/19/1990)
World Tag Team Champions: Hart Foundation (8/27/1990)

Opening montage: When Hulk’s not gunning for the WWF title or making movies, he goes on the USO tour and hangs out in tanks at local army bases or he’s cheering up kids in hospitals. On his way to the arena today, he nursed a sick bunny rabbit back to health! It was red, white and blue and everything! Hulk Hogan is great!

Hulkamania 4

Hulkamania 4

I stumbled upon this at a local used bookstore and snagged it for only two bucks. This video was released November 1989, and really plays up the “No Holds Barred” movie which is deemed a box office hit. Sure, it only made $16M, but who’s counting. Read the rest of this entry

Saturday Night’s Main Event #28 (10.90)

WWF Saturday Night’s Main Event #28: Oktoberfest
October 13, 1990
Toledo, OH
Sports Arena

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Ultimate Warrior (4/1/1990)
Intercontinental Champion: Kerry Von Erich (8/27/1990)
World Tag Team Champions: Hart Foundation (8/27/1990)

So now we get ANOTHER bad idea for a theme: the Oktoberfest edition of SNME. The superstars who aren’t on the card get to sit around in Bavarian costumes and drink beer while everybody else has to work.

Saturday Night’s Main Event #26 (04.90)

WWF Saturday Night’s Main Event #26: The Tussle in Texas
April 28, 1990
Austin, TX
Erwin Center
(Taped on 4/23/1990)

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Ultimate Warrior (4/1/1990)
Intercontinental Champion: Mr. Perfect (4/23/1990)
World Tag Team Champions: Demolition (4/1/1990)

This would be the first themed episode of SNME in over four years. Since they are wrestling in Texas, the clichéd-cowboy theme is taken a little bit to the extreme with McMahon and Ventura (complete with cowboy hats) riding out on horses to the announcers table. Also during the whole show, McMahon tries to use as many cowboy metaphors as possible. I’m guessing the next sentence goes without saying.

Your hosts are Vince McMahon & Jesse “Haystacks” Ventura! Read the rest of this entry

WrestleMania VI

WWF WrestleMania VI: The Ultimate Challenge
April 1, 1990
Toronto, ON, CA

World Champion: Hulk Hogan (4/2/1989)
Intercontinental Champion: Ultimate Warrior (8/28/1989)
World Tag Team Champions: Andre the Giant & Haku (12/13/1989)

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon & Jesse Ventura! This would be Jesse’s last WWF PPV.

Since we’re in Canada, the Canadian national anthem is the appropriate song. The anthem is performed by none other than Robert Goulet, who you can now see entertaining people in hotels all over Las Vegas! That’s the best Vince could do? What was Bryan Adams doing that weekend? Read the rest of this entry
