WrestleFest 1991

WWF WrestleFest ’91

There’s nothing like a good ol’ 2 hour WWF Coliseum Home Video. For me, it’s like stepping back into your childhood when wrestling was much more enjoyable. Your host for this one is the “Man of Leisure” Macho Man Randy Savage! When this video was released, it would be four months after losing a retirement match to the Warrior at WrestleMania and regaining the love of his life, the late Miss Elizabeth who would soon become Mrs. Elizabeth at the following SummerSlam. They cut to Savage taking a nap by the pool IN HIS WRESTLING GEAR having a possible recurring flashback of the final moments of his WrestleMania match. He awakes and starts talking to the camera like he didn’t know they had been there all along and begins to go insane immediately by sharing with us that he’s disappointed that he didn’t get to wrestle the Macho Man during his great career. Blah, blah, blah. Alright, let’s get on with this, Randy!

Saturday Night’s Main Event #29 (04.91)

WWF Saturday Night’s Main Event 29
April 27, 1991
Omaha, NE
Civic Auditorium
(Taped on 4/15/1991)

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Hulk Hogan (3/24/1991)
Intercontinental Champion: Mr. Perfect (11/19/1990)
World Tag Team Champions: The Nasty Boys (3/24/1991)

This is the final SNME episode to air on NBC for fifteen years due to declining ratings. The remaining two episodes (2/92 and 11/92) would be picked up by Fox, which seemed to get a lot of NBC’s table scrapings in the early ’90s.

Your hosts are Vince McMahon & Randy Savage, because he’s retired from all that ‘rasslin! Read the rest of this entry

WrestleMania VII

WWF WrestleMania VII: Superstars and Stripes Forever
March 24, 1991
Los Angeles, CA
L.A. Sports Arena

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Sgt. Slaughter (1/19/1991)
Intercontinental Champion: Mr. Perfect (11/19/1990)
World Tag Team Champions: Hart Foundation (8/27/1990)

So much for that 100,000+ sell-out crowd at the LA Memorial Coliseum. Due to low ticket sales and a supposed bomb scare, the WWF had to settle with the MUCH smaller LA Sports Arena that held just over 15,000 people.

Willie Nelson sings the national anthem. Yeah, doesn’t get much more American than a pothead tax evader.

The Main Event #4 (11.90)

WWF The Main Event #4
November 23, 1990
Fort Wayne, IN
Allen County Coliseum
(Taped on 10/30/1990)

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Ultimate Warrior (4/1/1990)
Intercontinental Champion: Kerry Von Erich (8/27/1990)
World Tag Team Champions: Hart Foundation (8/27/1990)

What would’ve been a 90-minute SNME #29, turned into a 60-minute “The Main Event #4” and was aired the night after the Survivor Series. The major Hart Foundation/Rockers tag title switch was supposed to air, but was cut from the show. From what I’ve heard, the reason the title switch was never recognized was because of backstage problems with different tag teams, so Vince dropped the whole thing and returned to the belts to the Harts as if nothing had happened.

Saturday Night’s Main Event #27 (07.90)

WWF Saturday Night’s Main Event #27: Wild Kingdom
July 28, 1990
Omaha, NE
Civic Auditorium
(Taped on 7/16/1990)

The current WWF Champs were as follows:
World Champion: Ultimate Warrior (4/1/1990)
Intercontinental Champion: Mr. Perfect (4/23/1990)
World Tag Team Champions: Demolition (4/1/1990)

From Vince’s odd sense of humor comes a parody of the “Wild Kingdom” nature show. In between matches, we would check in with our friends Marlon Perkins (played by Lord Alfred Hayes) and Jim Fowler (played by Gene Okerlund) who are involved in an on-going safari. The whole time, Gene remains in his usual character (It’s Gene, not Jim!), but Lord Alfred really seems to think he’s zoologist Marlon Perkins. It’s as hilarious as it sounds.

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Jesse “I wear Indiana Jones cabana wear” Ventura! This would be Ventura’s last SNME. Read the rest of this entry
