Your host is Bill Mercer. He’s finally growing out that mustache. Sheesh. That Amish beard was WEIRD.
- King Kong Bundy vs. The Magic Dragon (w/Arman Hussein)
Before the match, Bundy tells us that “The Man” is in the building, but he won’t be out here because he’s not needed to support Bundy against such a low caliber opponent. Well, you can almost bet the farm that this match will be ALL about Bundy underestimating Dragon. In fact, World Class fans despise Bundy so much, that Dragon actually gets some babyface reactions for what he does here. Dragon makes one last comeback before getting caught in Bundy’s arms and slammed to the mat to set up the RUNNING SPLASH for the three-count. (7:33) Interesting to see Magic Dragon get some cheers and Bundy battling what’s left of H & H.
We see the WCCW TV debuts of two very important figures in the promotion’s history: “Iceman” King Parsons and “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin. Where did Parsons get the nickname “Iceman”? He used to drive a truck and deliver ice, man. He’s also not a fan of this Arman Hussein character, which is part of why he’s here. Now Mercer brings out Jimmy Garvin. He’s got the strut, big smile, the sequined jacket, the big hair, and white gloves. And look, he’s got Sunshine with him. Garvin puts over the territory and seems like a real nice dude. His only problem is that he REFUSES to have his matches filmed. Bill Mercer just thinks that request is pretty ridiculous.
After the break, Arman Hussein tells Bill Mercer that it’s insulting to his intelligence bringing in another black wrestler like Iceman King Parsons. Since Parsons is a friend of the Von Erichs, he’s an enemy to Arman Hussein. As for “The Man”, Tola Yatsu will take care of him.
- Iceman King Parsons vs. Arman Hussein
Hussein is wearing Iron Sheik boots for this contest. He stalls for a bit, but then Parsons is on Hussein like a chicken on a junebug. Don’t laugh, this is SOUTHERN RASSLIN, YALL. Parsons backdrops Hussein and dropkicks him down for the quick and easy 1-2-3 in 1:42. Crowd loves seeing Hussein lose so quickly. Therefore, they now love Iceman Parsons.
- “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin (w/Sunshine) vs. Al Madril
Garvin wants the cameras turned off. Since World Class obliges him, we now go to the “Devastation Inc. Press Conference”…
We are introduced to General Skandor Akbar who is sitting with King Kong Bundy, an American Indian who appears to be some sort of errand boy, and a couple harem girls. He tells us about his unlimited wealth, gives us an injury update on the Great Kabuki, and how Devastation Inc. will put the Von Erich boys into early retirement. Akbar feels that the Von Erichs robbed King Kong Bundy of an NWA world title shot, and they will pay. As for Tola Yatsu and Arman Hussein, they are just little problems that will be solved. Bundy is busy counting hundred dollar bills when “the press” start asking questions. Oh, but Akbar refuses to answer them.
- Non-title match: NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Champions The Fabulous Freebirds vs. Kerry, Kevin, & David Von Erich – (Lumberjack Match)
Boy, I wonder what the ratings share was for this match. The lumberjacks for this one are King Kong Bundy, Jimmy Garvin, Sunshine, Iceman King Parsons, Al Madril, Tola Yatsu, and Arman Hussein. The crowd is ROCKING in the Sportatorium. Gordy works his magic to draw Kerry into the Freebirds corner. Once he does, Hayes tags in and thinks he’s got the advantage. However, Kerry blocks a hiptoss out of the corner and then hiptosses each one of the Freebirds. Hayes rolls out in front of Bundy I’m assuming thinking that he won’t be bothered, but Bundy puts Hayes back inside the ring. Kerry winds up and lands a big right hand on Hayes. He scurries over to Gordy for a tag. Kerry decides to bring David into the match. They lock up and David whips Gordy off into the ropes only to telegraph a backdrop. Gordy then charges David, but misses and crashes into the ropes. Tag to Kevin, he’s got dropkicks for each one of the Freebirds. Kevin gets too excited though and doesn’t realize he’s in the Freebirds corner. Buddy tags in and knees Kevin in the back while Gordy keeps him in place. While Roberts keeps Kevin on the wrong side of town, David and Kerry get a little antsy coming in and popping the other Freebirds. Just a great heat segment on Kevin by the Freebirds. Gordy misses a corner charge and hot tags Kerry. After Kerry gets a backdrop and a knee drop, Gordy manages to push him back into the Freebirds corner. They cut the ring in half on Kerry. Buddy punishes Kerry with a hammerlock, and then Hayes works the back with a suplex and a backbreaker. When Kerry fires back on Gordy, he gets dumped right in front of Bundy. Back inside, Buddy and Kerry have a DOUBLE-KO. Hayes drags a loopy Buddy Roberts over to Gordy for a tag. Gordy tries to stop Kerry, but we still get the HOT TAG TO DAVID anyways. Like a boss, Kerry grabs Gordy’s ankle causing Gordy to try and balance on one foot. As soon as David applies the Sleeperhold on Gordy, it turns into a pier-six brawl. Kerry applies a sleeperhold on Buddy and they both go over the top rope. While all the lumberjacks are dealing with that, Hayes dumps Kevin over the top rope behind ref David Manning’s back, breaks up David’s CLAWHOLD on Gordy by lowering the boom on him, and then knocks Manning to the floor. Hayes thinks it’s all over as Gordy lifts up David for the PILEDRIVER, when in fact Kevin comes off the top and lowers the boom onto Gordy! As Manning gets back in the ring, Kevin lays David on Gordy for the 1-2-3. (10:40) After the bell, the Freebirds realize mentally what just happened to them. The crowd is all, “Go Home Freebirds”. Just bell to bell crazy action with warring families that just want to fight each other. With a lot of heels, you see them back down to the babyfaces. You don’t see that here. The Freebirds had no problem FACING the Von Erichs, they just didn’t want to RISK their titles and the riches the people perceive those championships to bring. What makes this such a great rivalry is that the teams feel evenly matched and they complement each other very well. This is World Class at its best. With a hot crowd and everybody working hard playing their roles so well, you can’t beat it. ****¼
Afterwards, Bill Mercer meets with the Von Erichs. Now that they have beaten the Freebirds, that should prove that they deserve an NWA world six-man tag team championship match.
NEXT WEEK: David Von Erich meets Buddy Roberts, Tola Yatsu battles Al Madril, and we’ll get another interview with “The Man”.
