NWA American Tag Team Champions: The Fabulous Freebirds (11/26/1982)
NWA Texas Heavyweight Champion: David Von Erich (4/4/1983)

Your host is Bill Mercer.

  • Chris Adams vs. The Mongol (w/Skandor Akbar)

This is the Mongol’s first match on WCCW TV. He’s just a big white guy who evidently can’t talk, so they gave him an Asian gimmick. You may remember him from the WWF as Cousin Luke. If not, that’s okay too. It’s a brawl all the way. Adams hits Mongol with about four SUPERKICKS, but can’t get the pin. After one SUPERKICK in the corner, Adams charges Mongol for a monkey flip and gets tossed over the top rope to the floor for the DQ. (3:55) Adams flies back inside with a missile dropkick. They get into a pull-apart brawl as it appears this feud will continue. Adams is too good for this. *

Bill Mercer interviews Chavo Guerrero to give the people an introduction to Chavo. He’s like the new Al Madril!

  • Jimmy Garvin (w/Sunshine) vs. Chavo Guerrero

This could be fun. Garvin does his posing and strutting to start, but quickly retreats to the floor after a hiptoss out of the corner and a series of dropkicks. Back inside, Chavo punishes Garvin with a couple different headscissors holds. Garvin puts the boots to Chavo, but Chavo moonsaults off the top rope away from him and backdrops Garvin down for the surfboard. Some chops and a spinning heel kick puts down Garvin for two. Chavo peppers Garvin with a bunch of right hands and jackknife rolls him up for 1-2-NO! As the bell sounds signaling a ten-minute time-limit draw, Chavo hoists Garvin up in a hangman’s neckbreaker. (8:07, actually) Sunshine lets Chavo know what she thinks about that hold after the bell. Pretty cool introduction to Chavo to see what he can do. Garvin didn’t do a whole lot in return though, but they only had eight minutes. **½

  • Handicap Match: Kamala (w/Friday, The Mongol, and Skandor Akbar) vs. Bill Rathke & Roberto Renesto (w/Arman Hussein)

They are really giving Kamala the Kabuki treatment now with a handicap match. Friday is essentially Kim Chee just with a different name. Kamala just chops these guys around and does his thing. Renesto gets dumped out so that Kamala can deliver AIR AFRICA to Rathke which eliminates him at 2:30. Renesto receives the same punishment to give Kamala the win 3:05. Give it up, Hussein. You can’t beat this guy!

  • NWA American Tag Team Champions Buddy Roberts & Michael Hayes vs. David Von Erich & Iceman King Parsons

Jimmy Garvin and Sunshine are at ringside to film David Von Erich. Iceman and Buddy start the match. You can better believe that Buddy can’t handle the Iceman. He wears down Buddy with a headscissors, but gets thumbed in the eye before he tags Hayes. A slam and a fist drop by Hayes proves unwise. You know, because Iceman is black. Apparently they have harder skulls than white people. Iceman makes him pay with a bunch of punches and a headbutt. He and David keep Hayes in their corner for a bit just beating on him. Buddy gets a tag and the Freebirds regroup out on the floor. Back inside, Hayes kicks Parsons in the back when he comes off the ropes. That’s all they need to capitalize and turn the tide. That change of control proves to be short-lived as Hayes telegraphs a backdrop and Iceman makes the tag to David. He applies the CLAWHOLD, but here comes Roberts as the whole match breaks down. The good guys whip the Freebirds into each other, but Hayes falls back towards David and knocks him to the floor. While Sunshine is just standing there minding her own business getting a close up of Von Erich, David almost slaps her one good time. Obviously not liking that, Garvin grabs the camera. When David starts to go back inside the ring, he nails David with the camera! While Parsons and Buddy are going at it, Hayes rolls Von Erich inside the ring and covers him for the 1-2-3. (9:30) Ah, the ebbs and flows of the Von Erichs/Freebirds feud. Not to mention the Jimmy Garvin conflict getting lots of attention here. Fun match, but certainly more angle-driven than a classic encounter. **½

NEXT WEEK: Kerry Von Erich, Iceman King Parsons, and Chavo Guerrero meet the Fabulous Freebirds in a penalty box match! What exactly is a “penalty box match”? Find out next week!
