Lucha Underground
April 29, 2015
Los Angeles, CA
The Temple
The current Lucha Underground champs are as follows:
Lucha Underground Champion: Prince Puma (1/7/15)
Lucha Underground Trios Champions: Angelico, Ivelisse & Son of Havoc (4/22/15)
AAA Mega Champion: Alberto El Patron (12/7/14)
Dario Cueto and the Crew meet outside at some weird, dingy warehouse. He is very upset that the Crew couldn’t even secure the Trios championship when he basically handed it to them on a silver platter. Apparently they need some real motivation. Cueto opens the door and shows them whom call he calls his brother. A shadowy figure that appears to be behind bars stands up and gets really tall. We can’t see what or who it is though. Anyways, the Crew continue to slowly look up with their eyes and mouths wide open.
Your hosts are Matt Striker and Brother Vampiro.
- Fenix vs. Killshot
Hmm, no entrance for Fenix. Big Ryck and the Mack are conspicuous by their absence. Since these two haven’t met in Lucha Underground, there’s a feeling out process to start. Once they have been formerly introduced, Killshot heads to the floor. Fenix fake dives and then leaps through the ropes for a headscissors on Killshot. Back in, Killshot shows off his moonsault plancha on the other side. In the ring again, Fenix unleashes some strikes on Killshot and goes for a springboard tornado DDT, but Killshot puts on the brakes and hoists Fenix up for a suplex. Killshot fires back with the somersault and the jumping cutter. Back suplex onto the knees gets two. Fenix fires back with a series of kicks in the corner and lands on his feet when Killshot tries a German Superplex. However, he still runs right into a kick from Killshot. Fenix stops Killshot up top though with a knee strike and picks him up for the FIRE DRIVER to get the win. (5:59) Pretty decent singles debut for Killshot. I didn’t feel like he did anything different than he did in the trios matches though. At least in this example, he just sort of does fancy moves and doesn’t really tell much of a story. **
Back in the locker room, Dario Cueto plays both sides between Drago and Prince Puma – like a good businessman should. An angry Hernandez approaches Dario and tells him that Cuerno and Cage will just work together against me in their triple-threat match. To create a singular goal, Dario makes their triple-threat match tonight a number one contender’s match for the LU championship. That works.
- Famous B vs. Ricky Mandel vs. Argenis vs. Vinny Massaro
No real match. Texano comes out and literally gets rid of everyone – including the ref. Reminds me of that time Sid Vicious did this back on Nitro in WCW. There’s even a powerbomb involved! He vents about being attacked by that guy (Shawn Daivari) last week and personally invites him back to the temple – for the beating of his life. Well, that doesn’t sound like very much fun.
Outside the Temple, Dario Cueto is trying to make a call when some crazy fan with an Aztec Pride shirt walks up to him. He doesn’t want autographs or tickets, he wants to be a part of the show. His name is Marty “the Moth” Martinez (the Moth is his spirit animal~!) and he’s got Aztec blood running through his veins. You may remember him from the Tough Enough revival a few years ago – Martin Casaus. Cueto doesn’t think this guy has what it takes to compete in Lucha Underground, but thanks him for being a fan and closes the door behind him. Someone call security. There’s a crazy fan outside the building!
- #1 Contender’s Match: Hernandez vs. King Cuerno vs. Cage
This starts exactly how Hernandez predicted with him getting double-teamed. Of course when Cuerno goes for the victory, the story of the match begins to change as he and Cage go at it for a few moments. Hernandez runs in for the double clothesline and misses to eat a DOUBLE SUPERKICK. Cage starts to suplex Cuerno around until Hernandez flies from the apron with a slingshot double clothesline to wipe them both out. Hernandez goes for the Border Toss on Cuerno, but Cage saves the day with a dropkick. Cage then flapjacks Hernandez into a knee strike from Cuerno. Cage and Cuerno argue some more over who will do what to Hernandez. Cage ends up getting booted out to the floor and Cuerno receives a bow and arrow slam from Hernandez. I don’t know what you call that. When Cage and Hernandez stare each other down, Marty the Moth runs into the ring to declare he is here. That’s when Cuerno gives him a running dropkick in the corner. Hernandez slaps him silly and then Cage throws him out. Striker says he’s clearly unstable. He’s got a Damien Sandow look and vibe to him. Maybe a little comedy is what this promotion needs. We’ll see how they handle this guy. From there, Hernandez dropkicks Cage out of the ring and gives Cuerno an INVERTED SIDESLAM for the win. (4:55) I expected more out of these three, but I don’t really know why. Neither Cage nor Hernandez are going to be long match guys. Cuerno has already had a title match, so it’s unlikely he would get another. Especially when the story is heading more in the direction of Hernandez. *½
Earlier in the day, Vamp interviews the new Lucha Underground Trios champions Angelico, Ivelisse, and Son of Havoc. They still aren’t getting along, but will fight together when it comes fighting time.
- Title vs. Career: Lucha Underground Champion Prince Puma (w/Konnan) vs. Drago
So I won’t have to tell you during the recap, Konnan is very vocal towards willing his moneymaker Prince Puma forward in this one. Respect is shown between these two to start as they shake hands and begin with headlocks and such. Puma picks things up a bit with a back flip headscissors. Drago fires back with a nice headscissors of his own to send Puma to the floor and busts out the corkscrew plancha. After Puma gets beaten up, Drago eats a springboard dropkick to go to the floor. Puma unloads on Drago with his awesome moonsault plancha. Back inside, Puma lands one of his amazing hilos. Puma continues with a bow and arrow flipped around to a facebuster and rolled around into a pinning situation for 1-2-NO! Drago comes back with a TORNILLO and a tilt-a-whirl lucha armdrag leads to Puma getting caught in a kimura headscissors submission! Puma reaches the ropes though. He comes back with a back suplex and a standing SSP for two. BENADRYLLER fails and allows Drago to land a reverse frankensteiner. Cover, 1-2-NO! They go superkick for superkick, but then Puma delivers a Blue Thunder Driver for two. Another slugfest, but Puma takes down Drago with an enziguri. Puma can’t get the BENADRYLLER here either and the ref gets knocked down. Oh, boy. Drago manages to get Puma in position for the CANADIAN DESTROYER. YES. Cover, 1-2-3-4-5-6. No ref. Hernandez comes down and goes to run down Puma, but Puma hits the deck and Drago gets wiped out. Well, Hernandez remains about ringside while Puma seems very pissed off. Like a good babyface with this much on the line, he doesn’t want to win this way. With no choice left, Puma lifts up Drago for the MICHINOKU DRIVER and gets the win. (10:28) He seems real reluctant to embrace Konnan after a win like that and checks on Drago. And that does it for Drago. I was never a huge fan. He never really seemed to stand out amongst the rest to where I could give a crap about him. ***¼
As Drago returns to the back, Dario Cueto is waiting for him. He doesn’t say a word and just stares at him like a crazy person. He continues walking out of the building and once he’s gone, a big ball of fire shoots up. WHAT JUST HAPPENED. Did Drago finally get that extra “N” and turn into a full-fledged fire-breathing dragon? Did Drago get eaten by a full-fledged fire-breathing dragon? Did Drago spontaneously combust? Maybe we’ll find out next week. Then again if he’s gone from Lucha Underground, maybe we won’t. Maybe it’s like the Sopranos finale ending. You just have to make up your own mind about what happened.
And with that, we are outta here.
NEXT WEEK: Nothing announced.
