In case you missed last week, here are some highlights:
NOW ONTO THIS WEEK:
Yep, that sign did read “Whisky makes you frisky”. Dario Cueto heads down some stairs into a bar to meet with Councilman Delgado. You know him better as Lorenzo Lamas. This is his second appearance on the show. Dario gives the councilman some cash to be delivered to Delgado’s “employer”. Cueto says he is under his service. Dario wants to leave, but Delgado wants a drink and to let Cueto know that the police have opened up an investigation against him and the Temple. Delgado considers that they may have someone working from the inside, but Dario says he would know that. Delgado isn’t so sure he would. Delgado reminds Dario that the Temple is very important to his employer. In fact, his employer plans to come see it. He’s been waiting a very long time. Dario looks concerned. Delgado asks Dario if he thought Matanza was going to have all the fun? NOW DRINK UP.
HIPSTER BAND OF THE WEEK: Bang Data. DDP and Edward Snowden tag team name!
Your hosts are Matt Striker and Vampiro.
- Final Gifts of the Gods Aztec Medallion Match: Joey Ryan vs. Cisco vs. Cortez Castro
After being the first team eliminated in the trios tournament finals match two weeks ago, they now face off for an Aztec medallion. The GOTG title match comes next week! The Crew work together on Ryan, but then battle each other for a little bit. During their exchange, Ryan sneaks in and shoves Cisco out of the ring. He then schoolboys Castro and wins with a handful of tights. (1:19) You would think a match cut that short would have led to something, but nope. ½*
Elsewhere, Mil Muertes mentally prepares for tonight’s main event. Catrina has been waiting for this moment 197 years. Apparently, losing the first Grave Consequences match to Fenix last year and then “resurrecting” him was all part of her plan. But not tonight. She wants him to break every bone in the Monster Matanza’s body and watch her lick the face of a god so that they can both become immortal. As they walk away together, King Cuerno comes out from behind the TV set and all the candles. Oh boy.
- Lucha Underground Trios Championship: Prince Puma, Rey Mysterio Jr. & El Dragon Azteca Jr. (c) vs. Son of Havoc, Ivelisse & Johnny Mundo (w/Taya)
We are told Cueto has replaced an injured Angelico with a pink and white furry-booted Mundo. Another Unlikely Trio situation here. Something tells me this one won’t stick. Ivelisse and Dragon Azteca have a friendly exchange, but Ivelisse appears to possibly tear or pull something in her legs and tags out. I know that she’s legit injured, but I don’t know if this is the moment of the injury or not. Next we have a potential Lucha Underground dream match in Son of Havoc and Rey Mysterio. They run the ropes and whatnot culminating in a trip by Havoc and a standing moonsault on Rey. There’s a minor botch on a VINTAGE MYSTERIO sunset flip, but they make it work for a two-count. They catch each other’s kicks and then trust one another to let their feet go down real easy like. Enough of this friendly competition stuff. It’s time for Puma and Mundo to reignite their rivalry. Puma takes a bump to the floor and Taya starts attacking him until Ivelisse comes over to stop her. While the women squabble, Mundo brings Puma back inside for more punishment. Next thing we see, Puma roundhouse kicks Mundo and reaches Dragon Azteca for a tag. In comes Havoc on the other side. After Dragon Azteca does some lucha stuff, Havoc gets thrown into the ropes and does that cool shoulder bounce back to drop Dragon Azteca with a cutter. That gets two. Now Ivelisse and Havoc double team Dragon Azteca. Havoc hits the handspring elbow while Ivelisse enziguri kicks Dragon Azteca down for the flying double stomp to the back. Ivelisse kicks Dragon Azteca in the face for two. Hot tag to Rey, Havoc comes back in as he and Ivelisse refuse to tag Mundo. It could be 619 time, but Ivelisse trips up Rey. While they argue, Mundo misses Mysterio and hits Ivelisse with the Flying Chuck. Out goes Mundo to the floor. Dragon Azteca misses a baseball slide, but then ranas Mundo into the barricade. Meanwhile, Mysterio hits Havoc with the 619 and Puma puts Havoc away with the 630 SENTON for the win. (8:02) Melissa Santos calls the trios champs the NEW trios champs, but they came out with the belts so I know that’s a BOTCHAMANIA moment for sure. Disappointing little match, I must say. After the bell, Taya jumps Ivelisse for a beating. Mundo has a good laugh over it. **½
- GRAVER Consequences for the Lucha Underground Championship: Matanza (c) (w/Dario Cueto) vs. Mil Muertes (w/Catrina) 2815 4302 (14:47) ***¾
Just like last year, the Day of the Dead people come out putting flowers on the four coffins. That’s right. There’s FOUR coffins this time. Will three of the caskets hold someone to interfere on either one’s behalf? We’re about to find out. Muertes is angry and motivated as he fires off on Matanza. However, he gets a German suplex and thrown onto the casket outside the ring. Matanza sets another casket side by side, but here comes Catrina to blast a wooden chair over his back. No effect. Matanza grabs her, but he gets SPEARED by Muertes into a section of chairs. Now three of the four caskets are side by side. Matanza powerbombs Muertes on the casket. Muertes interrupts him trying to screw the bottom rope off from the ringpost. They struggle on the apron, but Muertes brings him down with the FLATLINER ONTO THE CASKETS! As Muertes brings a casket into the ring, Cueto tries to stop Mil and gets pulled up on the apron, but Matanza saves his brother with gutwrench suplexes. Muertes avoids the third suplex and spears down Matanza again. Muertes finally unhooks the bottom rope connector. They fight over that weapon, but Matanza wins the battle and starts ripping open Mil’s mask. It’s an interesting parallel to what happened to Fenix in last year’s Grave Consequences match. Matanza busts Mil open with the rope connector, but Muertes fights back with a chokeslam onto the casket. Muertes finds a tool box and puts on a lead glove of all things. That will make your punches sting just a bit more, wouldn’t you say? Matanza goes low to get him to stop punching him. The lid on the casket in the ring is broken and tossed aside. Matanza tries putting Muertes into another casket and as he closes the lid with Mil’s leg hanging out the side, Muertes punches through the lid and grabs Matanza’s face and pulls his face down onto the casket so he can break loose. WOW. Being that it’s such a cool moment, I feel like that was supposed to go down in middle of the ring instead. After Matanza throws Muertes into the barricade, he moves some more furniture around. It just doesn’t have the right feng shui. Anywho, Muertes decks him with the ring bell. Catrina walks over to Dario Cueto and slaps him down. Matanza then wipes her out with a wooden chair for a receipt from earlier. With her out cold at the direction of his brother, Matanza picks up Catrina and puts her lifeless body in a casket. In the ring, Matanza fights off Muertes trying to close the casket on him. He punches Mil in the throat and powerbombs him on the casket before giving Muertes the WRATH OF THE GODS powerslam into the casket this time for the win. (14:47) I enjoyed this immensely as it was a different kind of Grave Consequences match than the last one with Mil Muertes being the underdog in his own type match. Lots of cool spots and a fitting ending to this chapter of the story between these two sides. Oh by the way, Catrina is no longer in the casket. Dario opens the lid and finds it’s completely empty. The Day of the Dead people come back out and carry Mil Muertes in his casket to the back. And what do you know? One of the pallbearers is KING CUERNO. ****
Before we go, a limousine pulls up to the Temple. Councilman Delgado is there to meet whoever is in the car. Of course, we never see their face. Delgado delivers the cash and all the fancy lights go out in the car. He recalls the conversation he had with Dario Cueto earlier and confesses that whoever he is talking to is the most powerful person walking the earth. All we see is a figure lighting a cigar.
Until next time, so long for now.
NEXT WEEK: WE WILL CROWN A NEW GIFT OF THE GODS CHAMPION!
