EWW (which spells WWE backwards, btw). Michael Cole is here tonight. He’s hyping the ‘Money in the Bank’ briefcase and brings out Dean Ambrose – one of the guys who will be competing for that briefcase at the Money in the Bank PPV on June 19. Cole congratulates Ambrose his win in the first ever Asylum match back at Extreme Rules. IT WAS TOO LONG. Kevin Owens interrupts because he also will be in the MITB match. Much like me, Owens doesn’t want to see Cole’s face here on Smackdown and tells Cole he better leave before he gets to the ring. See ya, Mike. Owens says he will win the briefcase when Sami Zayn appears. Of course no one thinks anyone else is going to win Money in the Bank except them. Alberto Del Rio comes out as well. He will meet Zack Ryder tonight to earn a spot in the Money in the Bank match. Zayn starts talking about Ryder defying the odds at WrestleMania when Owens attacks him from behind. Ambrose and Owens head to the corner to brawl. Zayn tries the Helluva Kick when Owens ducks out. That causes some friction between Zayn and Ambrose while Del Rio and Owens mock them from the floor.
- Money in the Bank Qualifying Match #5: Alberto Del Rio vs. Zack Ryder
Ryder seems a bit overaggressive to start and makes a mistake telegraphing a backdrop as ADR kicks him in the mush. There’s a suplex for two and then Del Rio chokes him in the ropes. As he’s draped on the apron, ADR kicks him on the side of the head. Back inside, Ryder flapjacks Del Rio and wrecking ball dropkicks at him through the ropes. A reverse neckbreaker on the floor takes us to commercials. AND WE’RE BACK! Ryder escapes a chinlock, but misses a missile dropkick. Low Superkick to Ryder gets two. Ryder avoids the Cross Armbreaker with a jawbreaker and shoves Del Rio into the corner for the Broski Boot. Cover, 1-2-NO! Rough Ryder fails as ADR launches him into the corner. He sets Ryder in the tree of woe for the double stomp, but Ryder manages to avoid the blow. ROUGH RYDER! Oh, but Del Rio rolls out to the floor. What a pro. As Ryder rolls Del Rio back inside, Del Rio surprises him with the CROSS ARMBREAKER for the tapout! (5:58 shown) Another reason to love Del Rio. That finisher out of nowhere was fantastic. **½
They take us back to Extreme Rules and RAW to show us what has happened between the WWE world champ Roman Reigns and the returning Seth Rollins.
Speaking of returns, Big Cass is joined by his little pal Enzo Amore. I assume they have more jabs for the Dudley Boyz. Oh wow, out comes the Dudley Boyz before Enzo can run through the rest of his shtick. They want a fight and the Dudley Boyz agree, but it’ll happen on RAW so that they can immediately get out of this stinking town. Cass has one word to describe the Dudleyz.
Renee Young speaks with the new US champ Rusev and Lana. Kalisto gets his rematch tonight. Same match, same results. After tonight when he crushes the little mosquito Kalisto, he will never be able to fly again.
Video package airs on the Miz/Cesaro IC title situation. That title match takes place tonight after Cesaro defeated Miz to qualify for the Money in the Bank match this past Monday on RAW.
- WWE United States Championship: Rusev (c) vs. Kalisto
Rusev demands to be introduced first because he is the CHAMPION. Awesome. Kalisto gets fancy with Rusev to start and takes a headbutt to the abs when he tries a springboard. Commercials! When we return, Kalisto is adamant about slamming Rusev for some reason. On the third try, he finally slams Rusev – much like Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania III when he slammed the 1000 pound Andre the Giant. An embarrassed Rusev charges into a schoolboy for 1-2-NO! Springboard corkscrew attack and the headscissors face slam gets two. To the floor we go, Kalisto busts out a split-legged moonsault press to wipe out Rusev. Back in the ring, Salina Del Sol gets shoved off into the corner for the tree of woe, but Kalisto sits up avoiding a diving headbutt. 450 SPLASH by Kalisto, but Rusev brings up the knees. Rusev kicks a staggering Kalisto in the back of the head and applies the back bending ACCOLADE for the win. (5:54 shown) When Rusev looks to make sure he never hears from Kalisto again, Titus O’Neil comes out and gets Rusev to leave without throwing a punch. So now we’re moving from Kalisto to Titus O’Neil?
They show us a video package of Charlotte kicking her father Ric Flair to the curb.
- Dana Brooke vs. Natalya
WWE women’s champ Charlotte joins us for commentary. Jerry Lawler really takes offense to Charlotte’s treatment of her dad. Being of Flair’s generation, it wouldn’t make sense for him to side with the heel this time. They bring up that Dana and Charlotte are now calling themselves the Naughty By Nature Girls. Good grief. Match is short as Charlotte leaves the table and jumps Natalya as soon as she locks in the SHARPSHOOTER for the DQ. (0:45) They do a number on Nattie and dump her out of the ring so they can stand tall for the hard camera. No rating.
Still shots from the WWE world title match between Roman Reigns and AJ Styles from Extreme Rules are shown. On RAW the next night, he parts ways with his pals from the Club and then loses a MITB qualifier cleanly to Kevin Owens.
Renee Young speaks with AJ Styles to find out what’s next for him. The only thing that’s sure about AJ Styles is nothing’s for sure.
- Golden Truth vs. Breezango
I guess Breezango is a better name than FaBreeze. Neither team name are winners. Truth works the whole match here. Fandango knocks Goldust off the apron to prevent the hot tag. Breeze interferes and superkicks Truth behind the ref’s back as Fandango jumps on the pin for the victory. (1:37) Golden Truth may be having fun, but they suck at winning matches. ¼*
In the back after the break, Goldust tries to rebuild R-Truth’s confidence in them being a tag team since they are now two-time losers. Well, Tyler Breeze and Fandango laugh as they pass them in the hallway. Goldust tells Truth that the WWE Universe wants and needs the Golden Truth. With that, Truth sticks with the plan.
Seth Rollins makes his return to Smackdown. He builds up the crowd to get excited for him and then lowers the boom on them and walks out.
- WWE Intercontinental Championship: The Miz (c) (w/Maryse) vs. Cesaro
Cesaro slaps Miz and schoolboys him for two. As Miz bails, Cesaro runs down the apron for a CANNONBALL. Commercials! When we come back, Miz is in control working over the European uppercut arm of Cesaro. Even with all that work, Cesaro hits a few European uppercuts including the Very European Uppercut for 1-2-NO! Miz slams Cesaro down on the arm and DDTs him for two. When Miz isn’t allowed to untie the top buckle pad, Maryse gets up on the apron and exposes the turnbuckle. Cesaro fights him off and hits the springboard European uppercut. While the ref takes care of the turnbuckle pad, Miz counters a Neutralizer and tries the Figure-Four. Oh, but Cesaro counters to an inside cradle. The ref is slow to turn around and counts 1-2-NO! Cesaro rolls through an O’Connor roll and locks in a Sharpshooter on the Miz. WHAT. Miz makes the ropes. Cesaro looks for the Giant Swing and Miz makes the ropes to avoid *that* as well. Miz grabs his title and his wife to leave the match, but Cesaro brings him back inside for a flying body press for 1-2-NO! Cesaro charges Miz in the corner with the exposed turnbuckle. Miz pulls the pad down and Cesaro goes crashing into the corner. SKULL CRUSHING FINALE! Cover, 1-2-3! (7:29 shown) Good match with a solid gameplan and a great finishing sequence. I love when they use the turnbuckle pad to screw over the babyface. It’s so old school. I know we’re only five months in, but Miz just might be the most improved wrestler of the year – AGAIN. ***½
Until next time, so long for now.
Oh yeah, and HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!
