Memphis Wrestling
November 15, 1980
Memphis, TN
WMC-5 TV Studio
(first aired on 11/8/80)
The current Memphis wrestling champions are as follows:
CWA World Champion: Billy Robinson (10/27/1980)
AWA Southern Heavyweight Champion: Tommy Rich (9/29/1980)
AWA Southern Tag Team Champions: Ken Lucas & Rick Morton (11/3/1980)
Your hosts are Lance Russell and Dave Brown.
- Koko Ware vs. David Oswald
This is all about setting up for that dropkick. Dave Brown calls it the best dropkick he’s ever seen. Koko is the Diamond Dallas Page of dropkicks as he can seemingly hit it out of nowhere. Koko BANGS Oswald after catching himself off a corner whip and comes off the second rope with a variation of the missile dropkick to get the easy win. (5:15) CAN YOU FEEL THE BANG? Lance can’t believe that just happened. ¾*
- Ken Lucas & Rick Morton vs. The Angel & Jimmy Kent
While you would think poor Jimmy Kent is just here to take holds from the new southern tag champs while the Angel comes in and gets all the heat, the Angel actually takes his licking as well. All the same, Lucas finds the SLEEPERHOLD for Kent and picks up the win in 5:21.
Seeing the sleeperhold, Dr. Bill Irwin comes over to the desk and complains that the hold should be banned. He throws a big tantrum to take us into commercials.
Time for some Louisville Gardens promos. Lance Russell is standing by with Bobby Eaton and Tommy Rich who will be taking on Superstar Bill Dundee and Tony Charles. This might be the most I’ve ever heard Bobby talk before.
After the break, Bill Irwin interrupts the next match and challenges Ken Lucas.
- Ken Lucas vs. Dr. Bill Irwin
Irwin doesn’t think it’ll take long to beat him, but he spends the first thirty seconds getting his butt whooped. Irwin comes back with a low knee and slams Lucas for a running elbow drop for two. A back and forth brawl ensues with Irwin getting in some more low shots. Lucas fires back with nasty looking knee drops. They both run into a double-KO. Lucas finds the SLEEPERHOLD until a man Lance and Dave perceive to be an audience member walks into the ring and whacks Lucas with his cowboy boot for the DQ. (5:20) Of course we know it’s Bill’s brother Scott Irwin making his Memphis TV debut. Some jabronis come out to help Lucas, but Scott keeps them at bay while Bill continues to pound away on Lucas. Ricky Morton finally comes out swinging a chair at the Irwins to help his partner. Superstar Bill Dundee shows up to support the good guys as well. **½
Over at the desk, Dr. Bill Irwin introduces us to his brother Scott. They continue to complain about the sleeperhold and say it should be banned. Russell confirms that the hold is legal as long as it’s not a choke hold. Bill tells all of Memphis not to even try them as long as he’s around with his big brother. AWESOME.
Tommy Rich and Jimmy Hart come out to “randomly” pick another opponent out of a hat. Rich claims Lance Russell made him look like a crook last week when all the names in the hat were Tony Boyle. This week, Lance makes sure they are all different names in the hat. This week, Rich has Jimmy pick the name since he doesn’t trust Lance. Jimmy pulls out the name DAVID MCGEE. This was kind of ruined since he was already in the ring before the Lucas/Irwin match.
- AWA Southern Heavyweight Championship: Tommy Rich (c) (w/Jimmy Hart) vs. David McGee
Tommy destroys another ham-and-egger this week with aggressive holds on the mat and then the elbow to the top of the head ends it in 3:02. I’m pretty interested to see where this is heading.
Lance Russell runs down the card for the Louisville Gardens on Tuesday night.
Back in the studio, Sonny King stops by the desk to challenge the Magnificent Zulu – because having a great body doesn’t mean you can ‘RASSLE and make bank.
- Superstar Bill Dundee & Jimmy Valiant vs. Larry Latham & Buddy Wayne
FIRST FALL: This is the “expiration of time” match of the day. Latham and Wayne miss out on jumping Valiant and run into each other to cause them to get pinned in just :20.
SECOND FALL: Dundee briefly plays face-in-peril, but a tag to Valiant and that’s all over. Dundee shoots in and sunset flips Wayne for another pinfall in 3:06.
More Louisville Gardens promos. Lance Russell talks with Superstar Bill Dundee who will be teaming with Tony Charles against Bobby Eaton and Tommy Rich. Ken Lucas and Rick Morton talk about getting some serious revenge on the Bill and Scott Irwin for the southern tag titles. That should really be something.
That wraps it up for another week. Until next time, so long for now.
