TEN YEARS AFTER: ECW on Sci-Fi (03.25.08)
ECW on Sci-Fi
March 25, 2008
Read along if you have the WWE Network!
Your hosts are Joey Styles & Tazz.
Here we are on the EVE of WRESTLEMANIA 24.
- Kane, Tommy Dreamer, Hardcore Holly, Cody Rhodes, Kofi Kingston, Jesse, Festus, Jimmy Wang Yang, Shannon Moore, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Val Venis & Jamie Noble vs. The Great Khali, The Miz, Chuck Palumbo, Matt Striker, Mark Henry, Snitsky, Lance Cade, Trevor Murdoch, Brian Kendrick, Deuce, Domino & Elijah Burke
Yep, this is a babyfaces v. heels 24-man tag match to include everybody (well, trade out Matt Striker for Stevie Richards and you got it) who will be in the 24-man battle royal at WrestleMania 24 to find a challenger for the ECW champ. Non-stop action for the first minute or so, but nothing that really means anything as guys are just exchanging moves. They go to the floor where some of the smaller guys start diving on each other. Trevor Murdoch flies on top of the pile. LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR! Commercials. When we come back, the match breaks down and we’ve got utter chaos. As people start hitting finishers, Holly blasts Burke with the ALABAMA SLAM and starts chopping at the Miz, which I’m sure Holly quite enjoyed. As Holly gets pulled out, Festus squashes the Miz. Meanwhile, in comes the Great Khali with Brain Chops. Of course, he can’t stop Kane, who uppercuts him to the floor. CHOKESLAM to Matt Striker! Snitsky boots down Kane though. He misses an avalanche on Dreamer, but Mark Henry shoves Dreamer back into a corner. He then whips Dreamer into a big boot from Snitsky for the win, who I believe were actually the two legal men IIRC. (5:26 shown) There’s a bunch of finger pointing and taunting as we close this one out. WHO WILL FACE CHAVO GUERRERO? *½
They air another awesome Big Show/Floyd Mayweather promo. I would say there is no babyface here.
WRESTLEMANIA 24 – 5 DAYS AWAY!
Elsewhere, the ECW champ Chavo Guerrero rubs Tommy Dreamer’s nose in the mud for losing the big 24-man tag. Colin Delaney is just standing there since he and Tommy are pals. Since Tommy is fairly sure he won’t win the battle royal at WrestleMania and defeat Chavo for the ECW world title, he decides to challenge Chavo in a title match – TONIGHT. Chavo starts talking smack and winds up getting talked into a match with Dreamer. He says this is the closest Dreamer will get to the ECW championship ever again.
- Shelton Benjamin vs. Carlito
Another MITB ladder match encounter. Carlito clocks Shelton right at the bell and beats him down in the corner. Benjamin lands on his feet out of a monkey flip, but then Carlito lands on his feet out of a hiptoss. Okay then. Now what? Benjamin runs down Carlito with a shoulderblock, but then charges into a dropkick. Shelton skins-the-cat, but Carlito is there to nail him. He tries to sunset flip in the ring, but Carlito catches him and snaps Shelton on the top rope to send him bouncing to the floor. Back on the apron, Carlito drops Shelton with a DDT for two. Carlito is now all about the chinlock – crimping the neck. As Benjamin tries to escape, Carlito lands the springboard back elbow to maintain control. Back to working on the neck, this leads to an electric chair drop to Carlito. Weird springboard dropkick from Carlito gets two. A swinging neckbreaker scores another nearfall. Back to the neck. The crowd gets behind Shelton – because what else are they going to do. Shelton comes back with a roundhouse kick and starts pummeling Carlito. Backbreaker gets two. He lands the T-BONE SUPLEX, but gets two. Another nearfall after a swinging neckbreaker to Shelton. Carlito tries the Backcracker, but Benjamin counters to a Buckle Bomb. Now Shelton tries for Paydirt, but Carlito counters to a backbreaker for two. Carlito heads up top, but Shelton runs up the ropes and brings him down to hit a SUPER PAYDIRT. He rolls Carlito over and finally gets the three-count. (11:03) Way long and virtually heatless. *½
They air the cool promo video for the triple threat main event at WrestleMania 24.
Styles and Tazz then run down the WrestleMania 24 card.
Now they showcase who the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2008: Ric Flair, Rocky Johnson, High Chief Peter Maivia, Mae Young, Eddie Graham, and Jack & Jerry Brisco. The final inductee is announced: GORDON SOLIE.
- Stevie Richards & Kelly Kelly vs. Mike Knox & Layla
YES, IT’S LAYLA TIME. She is ready to rip into KK. They trade holds allowing Knox to trip up KK. Layla slings her around by her hair and just generally abuses KK. She misses a legdrop and hurts her butt. Poor thing. KK gets a WEAK enziguri and tags out. Stevie is all about the kicks and gets a nearfall on Knox. Layla and KK go to the floor as Knox lands the Sister Abigail finish in 2:32. ½*
Another Show/Mayweather promo as Money Mayweather talks his smack.
- Chavo Guerrero vs. Tommy Dreamer
The other 23 guys from the opening tag surround the ring to “scout the ECW champ” as Joey puts it. They play this like a lumberjack match as Chavo gets thrown back in the ring when he’s knocked to the floor. They set up a Dreamer comeback with a chinlock. Tommy hits a bulldog and puts Chavo in the tree of woe for the low running dropkick. The Dreamer DDT gets blocked, but he lands a reverse neckbreaker. He heads up top, but Chavo knocks him down and hits the FROG SPLASH for the win. (3:00) WEAK. Chavo looked like the man though. It’s a shame he’s about to get squashed at WrestleMania. As Chavo celebrates, everybody gets into the ring for a big brawl to close out the show. Festus stays in character the whole time and just stands on the floor still in character with his mouth hanging wide open. ½*
Smackdown is the last stop before WrestleMania 24. IC champ Chris Jericho will meet US champ MVP in the main event! Until then, so long for now.
