- Jerry Lawler (w/Jimmy Hart) vs. Steve Regal
Lawler is super confident to start against Regal. He yells at Russell and Brown about giving him some *real* competition. Lawler struts and laughs his way through the first couple minutes. During a criss-cross, Hart gets out of his chair and trips up Regal. However, Regal avoids a flying elbow drop and punches Lawler out of the ring for a DOUBLE NOGGIN KNOCKER with Hart. Oh boy. Back in, Regal is all over Lawler with a wristlock. There’s some hair pulling traded and the crowd goes NUTS. Lawler punches his way out and swears to the ref it wasn’t a closed fist. Regal blocks a turnbuckle smash and makes a short comeback on Lawler, but then Hart hands Lawler a foreign object. Regal gets nailed and Lawler covers him for the pinfall (8:06) A fine example of doing very little and getting a great response from the crowd. *½
After the break, Lance Russell speaks with the new AWA southern heavyweight champ Jerry Lawler. The people don’t have to hang their heads in shame now that Superstar Bill Dundee is no longer the champ. In his mind, Lawler says he’s the greatest wrestler who ever lived. He’s not in a good mood though. He vents about Dundee jumping Lawler while he was blindfolded for a match he agreed to compete in against Thomas Marlin last Monday night in the Mid-South Coliseum. Dundee is a coward with a yellow streak running down his back a mile long. Lawler wants to show everybody the tape of the blindfold match, but Russell says they don’t have the tape today because they have another match coming up. Lawler doesn’t believe Russell and thinks Dundee went in the studio before the show and destroyed the tape. Why? Because the tape shows Dundee’s true colors. He will beat the live out of Superstar Bill Dundee this Monday night. Lawler says Dundee has been hanging out with Jerry Jarrett a lot lately because he wants to keep Jimmy Hart in a cage during his matches. Lawler thinks our priorities around Memphis are all messed up. Jimmy Hart doesn’t belong in a cage – he’s a huge recording star! Bill Dundee belongs in a cage! Lawler says this will be the last shot Dundee will get at the southern heavyweight title. The bottom line is Jimmy Hart isn’t going to be put in a cage and that’s all Lawler has to say about it. Well, no matter what Lawler says, Hart will be put into a cage this Monday night. More on that in a bit.
Dave Brown runs down the card for this Monday night in the Mid-South coliseum.
They bring out the little chicken-wire cage they plan to stick Jimmy Hart in on Monday night. Superstar Bill Dundee comes out to talk about it. He starts to show off the cage when Jimmy Hart walks out. It’s all a setup to distract Dundee as Jerry Lawler comes over and starts beating on Dundee. They run Dundee into the post a couple times and then spray paint a yellow streak down his back. Hector Guerrero and Ricky Morton run Lawler and Hart off saving the day for Dundee.
Until next time, so long for now.
