This is night one of two nights of Nitro thanks to the NBA playoffs offsetting the time. Just poor scheduling too as this wasn’t live and didn’t air until 12:30 AM EST that night. And while tonight is only one hour, tomorrow night’s episode will air at 6PM EST (instead of the normal 8PM EST) and for a two hour show.
It’s a rough time for people like Bret Hart who just made a major heel turn on TV last week and with the scheduling the way it is, it’s going to be tough to continue the heat for the heel turn when the shows are all over the place for the next few weeks. Plus, there’s no Thunder until May 14 due to the NBA playoffs airing on TBS. And no one has ever heard of a WCW Saturday Night Party, so not enough people are watching that show either to know about the scheduling changes.
It’s just a mess right now.
Kevin Nash and Randy Savage come out to the nWo theme music. Nash does a sarcastic version of the nWo survey this week. This is WCW country, pal. He responds to Sting and the Giant’s challenge to the Outsiders. Scott Hall was last seen at a Trader Vic’s (like anybody in Norfolk at a WCW show knows what that is) with a Pina Colada in his hand and his hair was PERFECT. Looks like we finally got a match for Slamboree. He then announces that the nWo Wolfpac is expanding. The newest member is none other than the Macho Man Randy Savage. As for Hollywood Hogan, there’s a surprise coming. As for Bret Hart, Nash wants what’s left of him after Randy Savage gets done with him. Now over to Savage, Bret Hart is in a LOT of trouble and he’ll never get out of it. The nWo Wolfpac is where it’s at, brotha. OHH YEAH. Nash then brings out the first defector from Hogan’s nWo: it’s KONNAN. I don’t know why I put that in all caps. It’s not that interesting or a blow to the nWo. He cuts one of his silly rapping promos and just feels it’s an honor to be next to these two guys, but gives no compelling reason for leaving.
Special piece on Juventud Guerrera. He’ll NEVER SURRENDER, Jericho. Just so you know.
- WCW Cruiserweight Championship: Chris Jericho (c) vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr. (w/Eddie Guerrero)
Jericho brings out his framed picture of Dean Malenko and sets it up on an easel to make fun. He calls Juventud Guerrera a shell of his former self since he lost the mask and offers proof of that when he had Guerrera screaming I QUIT while in the Liontamer last week. He calls Malenko the #2 wrestler in the world next to Jericho. He then congratulates Malenko on being the new fry cook at Harry’s Burgers in Tampa. Since he no longer wrestles according to Jericho, Jericho says Malenko can continue to live vicariously through him. HA! Jericho shuts down a hot start from Chavo with a hotshot. While he’s chopping Chavo in the corner, Eddie is standing on the apron shouting in Chavo’s ear. Chavo manages to escape the corner and dropkicks Jericho into Eddie knocking him off the apron. Rollup by Chavo gets 1-2-NO! Springboard bulldog gets two. Chavo tries a headscissors out of the corner, but Jericho blocks and applies the LIONTAMER for the tapout. (1:52) Lots of arguing and disappointing glances between these three after the bell. This was good, but WAY too short. *
Bobby Heenan replaces Larry Zbyszko at the table for the rest of the hour. They replay the Buff Bagwell injury from Thunder and our esteemed commentators discuss. We will have a post-surgery update tomorrow night.
As Hollywood Hogan, his Disciple, and Eric Bischoff make their way to the ring, Schiavone makes the comment that Nitro has been sold out for months and the show 30 miles down the road can’t give tickets away. Hogan says that Randy Savage and Elizabeth are done. They are finished! They are no more. He actually responds to Konnan leaving the nWo. Hogan says if Konnan is the best the nWo Wolfpac can steal from him, he’ll send his maintenance man in Beverly Hills down to Van Nuys to get a hobo like Konnan who will jump in the truck to go pick his orange groves. HA! And for all the people who want to know WHY BRET WHY? It’s because he knows where the power lies, brother. We’re 4-LIFE and TOO SWEET.
- WCW U.S. Heavyweight Championship: Bill Goldberg (c) (76-0) vs. Scott Norton
Biggest test to date? Tenay remarks this is the first time we’ve seen Goldberg against the nWo. He wrestled Vincent on March 5 on Thunder, but does Vincent really count? Not as a member of the nWo, but as an opponent? Or a wrestler? Anyways, Norton is a GREAT opponent for Goldberg If you’ve been paying attention to the psychology of his matches since Spring Stampede. Saturn did a lot of work on the shoulder then and naturally Norton does the same since his finishing move is a shoulderbreaker. He posts Goldberg and manages the SHOULDERBREAKER, but Goldberg kicks out at two. He tries again, but Goldberg slips out and hits the Spear and the JACKHAMMER for the win. (2:48) Much like everywhere else at the time, Norfolk loves this Goldberg guy. ¾*
Seriously? They are airing this all important Bret Hart interview at like 1:25 AM? Alright. Gene Okerlund brings out Bret Hart so he can explain himself for supporting Hollywood Hogan. He calls the Scope the House That Hogan Built. He explains that wrestling is full of pimps and thieves — where good men die like dogs. If Randy Savage is feeling bad about what happened last week, then who’s crying now? Now Savage wants to challenge him to a match? Bret says Savage doesn’t have what it takes to beat him. He never did and never will. Gene pushes the issue about Hogan. Bret says he will tell Hogan to his face tomorrow night on Nitro. Okerlund wonders why Bret would screw over someone when he himself talks about being screwed over in another organization. Bret says there is no rhyme or reason and nothing makes sense anymore. He made an impact last week because he’s sick and tired of sitting on the bench. He has now arrived and made his presence clear. Gene considers getting out of the business if he can’t get a straight answer out of these guys.
OK – so it wasn’t *that* important of an interview, but still. This hour should have been more wrestling and less storyline progression if you ask me.
Until next time, so long for now.
WCW/nWo Slamboree LIVE ON PPV premieres May 17 from the Centrum in Worcester, MA.
